Last days to see Daniel Kruger’s “Fragments of the Future”

Over four decades of jewellery and ceramics, Kruger reassembles fragments of cultural memory: amber, coral, copper, silver, lemon seeds and found objects, placed side by side without a hierarchy between the precious and the ordinary. We also can call it the rich and the poor.

How might we imagine the future through fragments of the past?

Fragments of the Future presents Daniel Kruger’s first solo exhibition in Finland.

In our fast-paced, digital world, Kruger’s work invites us to pause and reconnect with the material world. Drawing on historical references, natural forms and unexpected combinations of materials, his jewellery and ceramics preserve fragments of memory while transforming them into something entirely new.

Jewellery and ceramics, in dialogue.

In Daniel Kruger’s work, the past is not a concluded historical moment, but a force that continually enters the present and participates in our imagining of the future.

Through processes of translation and recombination, cultural forms acquire new life, while memory is reactivated.

The dialogue between jewellery and ceramics reveals how ideas can move between materials and forms, returning in new configurations across time.

A piece of jewellery can become a microcosm: a small world of materials, forms and relationships.

Art historian Barbara Schmidt has described Kruger’s works as “microcosms”. Her use of the word kosmos is particularly suggestive: the ancient term encompasses ideas of the world, order and ornament.

In Kruger’s work, a button, a stone, a fragment or a vessel may become a fundamental element within such a microcosm. These objects may be familiar in themselves, yet their perception changes when they enter new configurations and relationships.

In this exhibition, you can discover not only Daniel Kruger’s newest works, but also some rarely seen earlier pieces. This 1995 ring is one example.

Beautifully balanced between organic forms and symmetry, it is a quiet yet dynamic carrier of time, skill, memory and possibility.

We were delighted to welcome a group of visitors from Työväenopisto (Finnish Adult Education Centre), who share an interest in art and gallery & museums.

During their visit, they had the opportunity to experience Daniel Kruger’s jewellery and ceramics in a personal and intimate way, looking closely at the works and discovering the connections between material, form and the body.

Fragments of the Future is now on view. We invite you to visit the exhibition and experience the works at close range — and to discover the intimate relationship between art, the body and everyday life.

Fragments of the Future brings together works from different periods of Daniel Kruger Daniel Kruger’s creations.

Rather than following a linear development, the exhibition reveals recurring ideas that return across decades — ornament, colour, material, natural forms and cultural memory.

These two works offer two different entry points into Daniel Kruger’s visual world.

We are especially pleased to welcome Daniel Kruger in person, travelling from Munich to Helsinki for the opening.

Bringing together jewellery and ceramic works spanning more than four decades, Fragments of the Future explores how memory, history and material continue to shape the present and our imagination of the future.

Born in South Africa and raised in Namibia, Kruger studied goldsmithing, graphic design, painting and sculpture before continuing his studies under Hermann Jünger at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. His practice moves freely between jewellery, ceramics and the decorative arts, bringing precious and everyday materials into unexpected relationships.

Works from different periods come together as a living constellation, where forms, colours, textures and memories return, transformed.
