It was a pleasure to welcome the Italian artist Paolo Marcolongo during his visit to Finland. 👋🖤

A key figure rooted in Padua’s renowned metalworking heritage, Marcolongo’s practice moves naturally between jewellery, sculpture and glass art. We love how he fuses the historic Murano glass tradition with a bold, contemporary jewellery language, perfectly balancing Italian craftsmanship with modern experimentation.

If you have admired Eero Järnefelt’s original paint box at the Ateneum Museum in Helsinki, you will love what we have on display.

Our gallery is proud to showcase the original paint box of the famous Finnish painter, Antti Favén, who used it to create many of his masterpieces.

This historical piece offers a rare glimpse into the artist’s life, inviting you to imagine the very moments of creation.

Come experience it for yourself at our current exhibition in

Aino Favén (b. 1957) has forged her own artistic path through materials, movement, and space. She does not perceive her family as a direct influence, but rather as an enabling environment in which artistic practice was a natural part of everyday life. present. In her childhood home, her father’s works were part of the visual landscape: the impact was subtle and layered, rather than overt.

Aino’s practice has evolved from textile art and jewelry toward installations and the use of recycled materials. In Finnish contemporary art, material-driven approaches and the tradition of craftsmanship form an important background, which her work continues in an independent manner.

Last week’s artist talk offered a glimpse into Aino Favén’s story. She reflected on how her parents’ open-mindedness shaped her free creative spirit.

Now, we step inside her studio for a more personal look at her family’s story.

During our visit, Aino shared a treasured family photo album kept by her mother. Its pages reveal Mauri Favén not only as an artist, but also as a father. The album offers a rare look at the roots of a creative current running through generations.

The exhibition Roots and Currents is open for just one more week. Come experience this multi-generational dialogue in person.

Our Roots and Currents exhibition with three artists combine history, evolution and contemporary.

The history part highlights the art of Antti Favén (1882–1948), known for European cultivation, a disciplined formal language, and a perceptive psychological approach. He studied and worked in Paris from 1902 to 1913. In the autumn of 1909, a significant joint exhibition of Finnish artists was held in Paris, featuring works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Eero Järnefelt, Verner Thomé, and Antti Favén. Le Monde Illustré published an almost full-page reproduction of Favén’s painting Marquise d’Aste.

– One senses the fleeting moment of happy inspiration, executed by a masterful brush... it is life itself fixed upon the canvas, wrote the magazine’s editor-in-chief at the time.

Favén is best known as a portrait painter. He portrayed four Presidents of Finland, two of them in official state portraits. Among his notable sitters were also Jean Sibelius and Eino Leino. His portraits are not merely depictions of prominent figures of his time, but studies of presence, light, and humanity.

In our exhibition you can see a couple of artworks by Antti. As a highlight you can also see his atelier case that he used for creating a lot of his artworks.

In Ateneum art museum’s exhibition “A Question of Time” you can see two gorgeous paintings by him: Päivänpaistetta (Sunshine) and the portrait of Jean Sibelius.

We warmly recommend you to experience our exhibition and the Ateneum exhibition together on the same day.

What does a creative life look like across three generations?

Roots and Currents: The Favén Artist Family explores the continuity of artistic practice within the Favén family, moving beyond a traditional chronological narrative.

The exhibition brings together Antti Favén’s personal and artistic legacy, Mauri Favén’s abstract works, and the mobiles and jewellery of the still-active artist Aino Favén.

Oil paintings, drawings, and moving forms are presented within a shared space, where tools, sketches, and photographs offer glimpses into the stories behind the works and persons.

Featured art:
1. Mauri Favén Maisema (Scenery), 1957, Oil on canvas, 54 cm x 65 cm

2. Aino Favén Lähteellä I (By the Pond I), 2012, Art mobile, Silk organza, acrylic sheet, aluminium tube, acrylic tube, Length 178 cm

A profound loss for the design world. Vuokko Nurmesniemi was a giant of Finnish fashion—a designer so influential that Issey Miyake himself was a great admirer of her work. She was the driving force behind Marimekko’s greatest heights before carving out her own path with her namesake brand, Vuokko.

We fondly remember the days when our first gallery was located just across the street from her boutique on Korkeavuorenkatu, where we’d for a chat. To us, she was more than a designer; she was a cultural icon. While trends come and go, there is always a ‘Vuokko’ in our closet. Local, global, and timeless.

Rest in peace.🕯️
