The horizon is a line that doesn’t exist. It is not a fixed boundary, but something that shifts in relation to our own point of view. The exhibition’s title stems from the direct experience of looking out across the Øresund, where the boundary between sea and sky appears imaginatively razor-sharp. Yet the very sight of the top of the Øresund Bridge bears witness to the curvature of the Earth. And, for that matter, there is no landscape that changes so incessantly and dramatically from one second to the next. It is an overwhelming and tempting subject, yet almost as impossible to approach as a sunset.
Nevertheless, this is what I have attempted in a series of new paintings, albeit indirectly and with a certain degree of resistance in the form of obstructions: observed through a grid, like a stage on which different components engage in momentary spatial interactions. Just as the horizon does not exist, the same can be said of space. The walls and boundaries we establish may define a space – but only provisionally, and in a sense artificially.
