Night Kitchen Bringing community together to celebrate the arts.

Night Kitchen is Wolfville's (perhaps the Valley's) premier musical variety show and takes places every first Saturday of the month from September to May. If you are interested in performing in one of the upcoming Night Kitchens, please send an email to [email protected]. Please note that NK is primarily an acoustic evening - for special requests, please include them in your email.

We want to thank each and every one of the performers who took to the stage at Night Kitchen Phantasmal last night. Every single one of them gave an amazing performance and helped make it another night to remember.

We also want to thank each and every audience member who came out to show their love and support for the performers and for Night Kitchen. The Night Kitchen audience is truly an audience like no other. They are the best audience (in our humble opinion) any performer can have.

So big thank yous all around to every single person who was part of Night Kitchen Phantasmal last night!

As we said in the last post there are still tickets to purchased at the door, first come first serve. We also want to remind everyone to bring their change with them to support the toonie draw!

100% of the proceeds of the toonie draw goes directly back to each and every performer. It is an additional way to show your support.

There is one last performer we are excited to share before Night Kitchen Phantasmal. Ben Friesen

Ben has been involved with the arts in the valley from an early age. When most of the girls left class for choir in the first grade, he figured he'd rather go sing with the girls than hangout with the boys. That decision would result in vocal training for competitions at Acadia. lessons he credits for the power behind his voice today.

He'd pick up the guitar in '96 after his friend approached him to write a song for their crush. guitar soon became his special interest. A few years later he played his first of many Night Kitchens, in the lil' red schoolhouse.

He was often seen at open mics and formed a few bands in the Valley and Halifax, but like Django his best performances were in someones kitchen, livingroom or backyard.

He's participated in each iteration of Night Kitchen, so he jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the latest revival.

Ben likes to perform covers as if he wrote them, often warping them with his own phrasing and showcasing his unique range of vocal tones. He chooses tunes he can sink his soul into and deliver the audience a glimpse of his weeping heart.

For those who like bad boys he says "I perform well, but I'm pretty bad at everything else"

Night Kitchen Phantasmal is happening tomorrow night and we can not wait! Online ticket sales stopped earlier today but if you have not yet bought your tickets, no worries, there are still some available to be sold at the door. Tickets sold at the door are first come first serve so don't wait until the last minute to show up!

We still have a couple performers to share with everyone before tomorrow night.

Next up is Jerome the Gravekeeper

For the past 19 years, Jerome the Gravekeeper has led Valley Ghost Walks conducting family-friendly historical productions throughout the streets and cemeteries of the most historically-rich, amazing valley in all of North America. He arrived from the west with two good hips in the late 1700s to look after the new burial grounds in Mud Creek...now the Old Burial Grounds in Wolfville. Jerome loves to celebrate the intriguing layers of history and culture found all around us.

Only two days until Night Kitchen Phantasmal! Who is excited? We certainly hope to see everyone come out and see these amazing performers and show your love and support to them.

The next performer we are excited to introduce you all to is Erika Kylnys

Erika Kulnys opens hearts with her powerful voice and songwriting. Her writing has been compared to Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell and her album Rise Up was Top Ten in Canada/US. Erika’s music inspires positive transformation and being true to ourselves and our planet. Erika has won awards for her songwriting including a Music Nova Scotia award, a $25,000 Watson Fellowship to study social justice music in seven countries and the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace Youth Award with El Jones for working towards a more peaceful culture through the arts. Erika has played Festivals such as Copenhagen Pride, The World Social Forum and Canadian Music Week and is heard on radio internationally including on CBC’s As it Happens, NPR, Sirius XM and BBC. Her music, rooted in the maritime tradition of storytelling through song, has international influences and speaks to people across cultures. Her upcoming album, Stand Together Every performance Erika gives comes straight from the heart with grace and unparalleled passion.

Night Kitchen Phantasmal is only a few days away and we are so exicted! We truly hope to see everyone out to enjoy this show.

The list of performers, as always, is amazing. Each and every one of them promises to lend their talents to make Night Kitchen Phantasmal a truly wonderful night.

The next performer we want to introduce to everyone is Alan Slipp

Alan Slipp is a well-known performer in the Wolfville area, treading the boards with as many theatre companies as will have him. From Quick As A Wink to CentreStage, from the Wolfville Theatre Collective to Stage Prophets to the Valley Ghost Walks, you can find Alan performing in a wide range of roles and accents. He's putting the phantasm in Night Kitchen Phantasmal with a gothic reading sure to set your spine a-tingle.

We are so excited today to share some information on one of our two headliners who will be performing at Night Kitchen Phantasmal!

We hope everyone is as excited to see Mushkat as we are!

Mushkat is Bill Travis, an independent singer-songwriter who has been writing, recording and performing music in Halifax NS Canada since 2004. His songs tend to be introspective and self-help oriented ("Look Upon the Ivy" and "To Thyself Be Kind") or influenced by observing other people's habits ("Look at Yourself"). His albums typically span a range of styles, including indie, rock, folk and bossa nova. His voice has been compared to Paul Simon and Ben Lee, and he has shared stages with some of Halifax's best, including Al Tuck, Erin Costelo, Andy McDaniel, Christina Martin, Gabe Minnikin, Bend the River and many more. His band features Mark Merrimen on bass, Chris Brown on drums, and Theo MacIntosh on guitar and sometimes piano.

The next performer to share with you is Carolyn Landry

Carolyn Landry is a member of Annapolis Valley First Nation in Cambridge and she lives in Wolfville. She is a Mother and Grandmother. She is an Acadia Alumna with a Master's Degree in Sociology. She has some titles but does not identify with any one of them. She is devoted and committed to her Indigenous practices of the 7 Sacred Teachings.

The next performers we are looking forward to announce are Rise Up Shannon

Naming themselves after both a river and a woman, Denise Aspinall and Aran Silmeryn have quietly made their mark as troubadours of the local music scene since 2003, earning praise for their silvery vocal harmonies and at times raucous infatuation with murder ballads and left-field underdogs. Accompanying themselves on a variety of strings and the odd whistle, they bring to life tales of dissolution and revenge, lost love and restless ghosts, from sources both contemporary and flung far in the past.
