20th Season Launch Party ✨🎉

On Saturday, September 12, a group including our founders, collaborators, donors, artists and many other friends gathered to celebrate our beginnings, and the way forward.

What an incredibly uplifting and meaningful evening this was! Many memories were shared through speeches and a beautiful video presentation, our Wall of Giving fundraising initiative was debuted, and exciting new merchandise was launched. We paid tribute to our recently departed Sylvain Bouchard and dedicated the coming 20th season to his memory and remarkable contributions to the dance and Disability Arts landscape. Thank you to Jamaal Jackson Rogers (Jamaal Jackson Rogers) for facilitating the night and bringing out the poetic spark within us.

Thank you to Ellen Bond () for capturing these moments, and to Thyme & Again Catering + Food Shops for adding flavour to the night with beautifully crafted treats.

Thank you to Great Canadian Theatre Company and its generous staff for helping us realize this evening!

As our Co-Founder, Renata Soutter, remarked on stage, "the people are the roots and the reason that this company has been so successful and continues to thrive.”

Are you, a friend, family member or client looking to explore dance in an inclusive space? Our Education program is welcoming new students of all abilities to move, connect, and have fun!

We offer three weekly Adult classes - Mondays and Wednesdays in-person in Ottawa (both starting at 6:30 PM EDT), and a virtual class on Tuesdays (6:30 PM EDT). Our first session begins on Monday, September 21st, so be sure to register in time to make the most of the program!

Our Children's classes begin Saturday, September 26th, and take place on Saturday mornings – younger group (suggested ages 4-7) at 10 am and older group (suggested ages 8-12) at 11 am.

We look forward to dancing, playing, and moving with you in our 20th season! 💃🪘🎶🎉

📣✨🎉WE BREATHE. WE DANCE.
Propeller Dance takes off on our 20th season!

Celebrating 20 years of trailblazing dance works and inclusive practice, Propeller Dance has contributed significantly to an equitable landscape of dance and Disability Arts in Canada. Together we create possibilities for a bright and inclusive future.

Of course, it would not be a fresh and funky celebration without a bold new look! We are proud to present a new logo that propels our work into our next era of leadership in dance x disability. Thank you to Tera Bruinsma for creating a beautiful logo set representing both our main mission of propelling dance for all abilities, and for the first time ever, logos that represent our three pillars of activity; Company (professional dance), Education (recreational classes), and Outreach (community-building).

I am pleased to announce three upcoming workshops on different accessibility practices, specifically designed for the live performing arts community.

Sept 10 - Build Access into Your Art Practice (Virtual Workshop) 6-9 pm EST
Learn how to make your artistic practice more accessible. Designed for artists, producers, creators and anyone interested in public events.

Sept 13 - Experimenting with ASL Shadow Interpreters (In person Workshop, Arts Court Theatre, 2 Daly Ave, Ottawa, ON) 10 am-4:30 pm EST
Learn how to work and integrate interpreters into your live theatre performance.

Sept 29 - Working with Audio Describers (Virtual Event ) 6-9 pm EST
Learn and build skills to consult with audio describers as a Blind or low-vision consultant. Observers welcome.

What better way to celebrate Disability Pride month than getting back into the groove of creating art with our bodyminds? 💃🤸

Amelia, Propeller’s Artistic Director, shares her reflections on disability pride, disability arts, and belonging during summer intensive with dancers Russell and Nicolas, and choreographic assistant Meghan.

“At Propeller Dance, really generating our material for and by each other together with disabilities, being around disabled folks and generating material that is a serious contribution to disability arts is also being so much at the forefront of immediate innovations happening all the time, and I think that’s profoundly exciting. But to have a space where we have inherent belonging, is what that pride is and then to get to put that on stage, or be out in the community, in the classrooms, like in all of these spaces and places, just feels extremely futuristic and extremely necessary. I’m just very very very proud to be a part of this community.”

At the end of this Pride Month we wish to amplify and celebrate our Emerging Choreographer's with Disabilities Program artist Taylor 'Doctor Androbox' Stocks

Propeller Dance provided a season-long program of contemporary inclusive dance; choreographic skills development and mentorship, and developing their outstanding new work The Turn based on grief and loss, and their lived experience as a trans and multiply disabled person.

Please take time to take in Doctor Androbox's recent public education project in partnership with DRAGis.ART 'Drag Speaks Back', using drag to challenge misinformation about 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Propeller Dance has a continued responsibility to uplifting historically marginalized artists; we celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ community year-round. Stay proud! ✨

Accessibility is not a final destination. It is an ongoing process of listening, learning, adapting, and making space for each other.
During National AccessAbility Week, we celebrate the people and relationships that aim to make dance accessible to everyone at Propeller Dance. Through every rehearsal, workshop, dance class, performance, and conversation, we keep working toward a more inclusive arts community.
Thank you to the artists, participants, staff, volunteers, and community partners who help break down barriers and create meaningful opportunities for connection, creativity, and expression.

Meet Propeller Dance!
