LAYERING "ETERNITY" 🦢🦢

Bringing this piece to life frame by frame ✨

This clip is at double speed, showing the process of working on the darkest black values in the water and the fine details on their faces 🪶

Building up this level of depth takes patience, but it is exactly what creates the final realism 🎨

✅ Do you enjoy watching the step-by-step process of how a piece comes together?

🦊 "RED FOX IN WINTER": ENDURING RESILIENCE ❄️

The brilliant sight of a Red Fox stepping out into the deep Winter snow is unforgettable 🦊

Against the cool white of the Winter woods, the Red Fox carries an undeniable presence, intelligence and resilience. This is a split second where the world stands completely still, and you realize you are sharing space with a creature of pure focus and grace ✨

Working with Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils on Arches hot-pressed watercolour paper allowed me to build up the crisp texture of his fur, capturing a deep warmth against the soft chill of the snow ❄️✏️

🐦‍⬛ "WISE WATCHER": RAVEN WISDOM AND IRIDESCENCE 🐦‍⬛

Ravens are remarkably intelligent birds with an intense presence. Their plumage is striking—it is thick, almost shaggy and shimmers in the light ✨

For this piece, the focus was on capturing the Raven's intelligently gaze, along with the subtle colours hidden within his dark feathers 🪶

I created the background in PanPastel Artist Pastels and Sennelier and Schmincke pastel sticks. For the Raven, I built up the fine details with various brands of pastel pencils on Clairefontaine PastelMat 🖌️

To replicate the natural iridescence of a Raven's feathers, I finished the piece with holographic watercolour paint in purples, blue and silver. This layer catches the light dynamically, bringing a realistic sheen to the final piece ✨

Artwork Details:

📐Size: 12 x 9.5 inches (30 x 24 cm)

🎨 Medium: PanPastels, Sennelier & Schmincke pastel sticks, mixed pastel pencils, and holographic watercolor on PastelMat

✅ Have you ever been close enough to see a Raven's feathers catch the light like this in person? 🐦‍⬛

🐦 "WINTER ROBIN": A DOSE OF WINTER RELIEF ❄️

We haven't even officially reached Summer yet, but with temperatures already soaring, looking back at this Winter piece is a bit of relief ☀️

The European Robin is entirely distinct from the American Robin found across North America. While the American Robin belongs to the Thrush family, the European Robin is a member of the Flycatcher family 🐦

Also known as the English Robin or Robin Redbreast in Great Britain, they are most familiar across the United Kingdom and Ireland, but their range spans across Europe, extending into western Siberia and North Africa 🌍

🎨 Artwork Specifications:

📏 Size: 12 x 9.5 inches (30.5 x 24 cm)

🖌️ Medium: Pastel pencils, PanPastel Artist Pastels, and Sennelier soft pastel sticks on light grey Clairefontaine PastelMat

✅ Have you ever seen a European Robin in person, or do you mostly see the North American variant where you live?

🪶 BRINGING "JOYFUL" TO LIFE 🪶

Wrapping up Canadian Environment Week and honouring National Higher Education Day with a brilliant burst of backyard wildlife 🇨🇦🎓

Wildlife realism naturally bridges these two themes together. To truly celebrate our natural environment requires the kind of rigorous, disciplined observation and technical study celebrated in higher education—closely analyzing every structure and texture to faithfully document the world around us 🌿🌎

Watch this male Northern Cardinal come to life through soft pastel layering—from the first underlayer to the crisp, final feather details, here is the evolution of "Joyful" 😊

Artwork Details:

📏 Size: 12 x 9.5 inches (30.5 x 24 cm)

🎨 Medium: Soft pastel pencils, pastel sticks and PanPastels on PastelMat

✨ "HOPE": A SUNRISE FOR OUR SHARED PLANET 🌅

Today is World Environment Day, a moment to reflect on our planet and the collective responsibility we have to protect it 🙏

Established by the United Nations, this day serves as a global call to action for environmental conservation, addressing urgent issues like global warming, habitat loss and sustainable practices. It is a vital opportunity to advocate for the health of our shared home 🌎

I’m sharing "Hope" as a reminder of the renewal and beauty that each new sunrise brings and the importance of our future 🌅

While my work usually focuses on intricate realism, this piece was a deliberate exploration of light and atmosphere. I created this using soft pastels on PastelMat, focusing on blending and layering to capture the warmth of an early morning glow rather than the fine details I usually employ 🎨

✅ How does this sunrise speak to you today?

🐭 "TRIUMPHANT JOURNEY": CAPTURING EVERY DETAIL OF THIS BRAVE LITTLE HEART ✨

Bringing this little one to life with soft pastel pencils on PastelMat (12x9.5” / 30x24 cm). He remains a symbol of courage, resilience and standing up for truth ⚖️

💎 "INDIGO": BLUES IN MACRO 💎

Taking a closer look at the details of my soft pastel piece, "Indigo", a male Indigo Bunting 🐦

I love the vibrancy of soft pastels to create brilliant, bright feathers 🪶 Many have asked how I get such fine, straight lines on the wing feathers. My method is to use extremely sharp pastel pencils and go over the lines and fine details lightly and repeatedly until they are straight and aligned 🖌️

I created this piece using soft pastel pencils for the details, soft pastel sticks and PanPastel Artist Pastels for the background, and a black gouache underlayer in the darkest areas 🎨

The piece is 12 x 9.5 in (30.5 x 24 cm) on Clairefontaine PastelMat 🖼️ Reference photo: François Simard (via Pixabay) 📸
