🎞 By the time he made "Ugetsu", Kenji Mizoguchi was already an elder statesman of Japanese cinema, fiercely revered by Akira Kurosawa and other directors of a younger generation. And with this exquisite ghost story, a fatalistic wartime tragedy derived from stories by Akinari Ueda and Guy de Maupassant, he created a touchstone of his art, his long takes and sweeping camera guiding the viewer through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives.

Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly, "Ugetsu" reveals essential truths about the ravages of war, the plight of women, and the pride of men.

📽 Suburban Tokyo, 1987. Imaginative eleven-year-old Fuki begins her summer break lonely and adrift – her kind, terminally ill father has landed once again in the hospital and her mother, distracted by the inevitability of his diagnosis, hasn’t much time for her daughter. Fuki responds to the situation not with tears but with placid curiosity about the prospect of death – becoming fascinated by the occult and experimenting with hypnotism. As the summer passes, Fuki encounters a string of lonely, imperfect adults, all of whom nudge her closer to an emotional truth she isn't quite ready to name yet.

Chie Hayakawa’s sophomore feature is a tender, often unsettling portrait of childhood grief and the sinuous imagination of an inquisitive young girl.

🎞 Back in 1996, Nicolas Winding Refn turned down a spot at the National Danish Film School to make his debut film, "Pusher."

This cult classic established him as an uncompromising filmmaker of great talent. The Pusher Trilogy showcases his skill in blending moody atmospherics and frenetic action, revealing the humanity in violent criminals and how any pusher is just one bad deal away from ruin.

The resulting trilogy – newly restored in 4K – stands as a masterful reinvention of international crime cinema, as poignantly human as it is brutally and viscerally realized.

🏛️ Art, ambition, and power collide when an unknown architect is hired to construct a French monument.

In 1983, François Mitterrand decided to launch an international architectural competition for the flagship project of his presidency: the Grande Arche de la Défense, aligned with the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe! To everyone’s surprise, Otto von Spreckelsen, a professor in Copenhagen, won the competition. Overnight, this 53-year-old, unknown in France, arrived in Paris where he was propelled to the head of this monumental construction project. And while the architect intended to build the Grande Arche exactly as he had envisioned it, his ideas would very quickly clash with the complexities of reality and the vagaries of politics.

🍿 "L’Inconnu de la Grande Arche (The Great Arch)" screens June 12, 15 & 18 at the ByTowne Cinema!

🎹 Michael Haneke ("Funny Games") directs this riveting study of female sexuality and the dynamics of control with "The Piano Teacher", an adaptation of a controversial 1983 novel by Elfriede Jelinek.

Isabelle Huppert delivers an icy but quietly seething performance as Erika, a middle-aged piano professor at a Viennese conservatory who lives with her mother, in a claustrophobically codependent relationship. Severely repressed, she satisfies her masochistic urges only voyeuristically until she meets Walter (Benoît Magimel), a young student whose desire for Erika leads to a destructive infatuation that upsets the careful equilibrium of her life.

📽 Stéphanie (Léa Drucker), a police officer working for Internal Affairs, is assigned to a case involving a young man severely wounded during a tense and chaotic demonstration in Paris. While she finds no evidence of illegitimate police violence, the case takes a personal turn when she discovers the victim is from her hometown.

Set against the backdrop of the gilets jaunes protests, "Dossier 137 (Case 137)" is a gripping, socially-charged thriller that was selected for official competition at the Cannes International Film Festival back in 2025.

🍿 From award winning director Dominik Moll ("Harry, He's Here to Help"), "Dossier 137 (Case 137)" screens June 5, 7 & 10 at the ByTowne Cinema!

📽 Fiercely independent 90-year-old Agatha Bock lives alone on her family farm. Despite health challenges, she defiantly tends to her land, cultivating heirloom seeds passed down through generations. Employing antiquated techniques, Agatha plants and harvests her expansive field of watermelons, beans, flowers, herbs, and vegetables entirely by hand. Without a car, cell phone, running water, or even a functioning landline, Agatha’s meditative processes and daily rituals form a vivid counterpoint to the rapid pace of contemporary life. Made intentionally with sensory sensitive viewers in mind, the film carves out a (mostly) calm space in a chaotic world.

Shot by an all-female crew over six years on 16mm film, the project captures the handmade materiality inherent in both the medium of film and Agatha’s tactile world.

🍿 "Agatha’s Almanac" screens June 12, 14 & 17
