Remembering the Past, Building a Better Future

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities of this painful legacy. We remember. We listen.

We believe the arts can create space for reflection, dialogue and hope. Through storytelling and the sharing of Indigenous knowledge, we can deepen our understanding of the past while helping to build a more respectful and inclusive future.

We invite you to explore NAC Indigenous Theatre’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation offerings, including the final chapter of and virtual and in-person opportunities that celebrate the strength, resilience, and vibrant cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

We also want to highlight the partnership between Arts Alive and Connected North which made it possible to offer a virtual concert by Juno Award-winning Dene singer-songwriter Leela Gilday, broadcast live from her home in Yellowknife as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

As we reflect today, may we also look forward with purpose, guided by Indigenous voices and inspired by the vision of reconciliation for generations to come.

A creative tour in the heart of the Far North 🎶❄️ Une tournée créative au cœur du Grand Nord

This winter, teaching artists Olivia Chislett and Zac Hackett travelled to the Northwest Territories and Yukon as part of the Northern Youth Creative Tour. Over a two-week period, they offered workshops and performances to young people in Yellowknife, Whitehorse, and Dawson City.

“These children may have special needs, but they are still children. They deserve access to the same things as other children. The NAC sees these children and tells us that our children have the same value as other children.”

Vanessa Tchicaya grew up going to the National Arts Centre and wanted the same for her son, Nathaniel. Given his learning needs, she was not sure that would be possible. So when his school was invited to a relaxed performance, she was thrilled.

Head to the link in our bio to read more about the NAC’s relaxed performances.
