From Sept 2012 until March 2023, Malenka Originals was Ottawa's go-to place for furniture painting and refinishing. Founded by Katrina Barclay in 2012, Malenka Originals was a unique combo of workshop and store; a place to learn, share, and get inspired about painted furniture. After 10+ years as owner, Katrina decided to leave the shop to focus on a new career, and passed operations to her employ
ee Lisa Silfwerbrand, who renamed the shop under her own brand, Recreated Designs. Malenka Originals was passionate about transforming unwanted, outdated furniture into contemporary, beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces, and equally passionate about helping and teaching others to do the same. The shop was Ottawa's original stockist for Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan, along with other tops products for refreshing furniture such as: Fusion Mineral Paint, Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint, Iron Orchid Designs, Madeline Brushes, Artisan Enhancements, Mint Decoupage Papers, WoodUBend, Royal Design Stencils, and more. The store also offered workshops for those wanting a creative space to learn about painting furniture. Malenka means "little one" or "darling" in Ukrainian. The name was in honour of Katrina's grandfather who called her 'Malenka Katrina'. Daniel Skibo was a master French polisher and antique restorer in Calgary, Canada, and largely the source of Katrina's passion for restoring furniture. Blog: www.malenka.ca
