Next up, Collaborator (Dramaturgy, direction, social media) for Tusk Turns One! Monica Ogden.
Monica Ogden is an Filipina actor, improviser, feminist activist, and content creator of Fistful of Feminism. Born in unceded Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territory, also referred to as Victoria B.C., she came into theatre by accident in 2008. Since then, she has performed with award-winning Paper Street Theatre Co., taught and facilitated drama/improv with The Canadian Improv Games, Theatre SKAM, Unexpected Productions in Seattle, and The Improv Embassy in Ottawa. As an activist, she has performed with the Intercultural Association of Victoria, and her self-produced web series Fistful of Feminism on YouTube seeks to challenge white supremacy and institutional racism in theatre spaces. In 2017, Monica premiered her first solo show Monica vs. The Internet: Tales of a Social Justice Warrior at the Victoria Fringe Festival, directed by Former Youth Poet Laureate Ann-Bernice Thomas. Together, they won Pick of the Fringe for Bravest Show. She is one half NickelPumpernickel with Tony Adams, a duo committed to theatrical experience tethered to social justice, community building, and deconstructing popular (white) Canadian theatre.
Tusk Turns One! is her first venture into dramaturgy, and her first show with May Can Theatre. She is excited to share this work and contemplate toxic masculinity with Victoria audiences. When she isn’t making theatre, she can be found (slowly) completing her BA in Gender Studies at the University of Victoria, or desperately trying to adopt a senior dog.
