Experiment! I am obsessing on textured art (mostly watching videos online...). Got myself a tiny tub modeling paste and some little wood panels to EXPERIMENT! It takes a whole lot more time and patience than painting... things I have very little of at this time, but I will keep on keeping on. I hope. Next up is plaster but gotta build up some courage first to tackle that 🤣

Gloria's Garden No. 12 - Iris.

"Named after Iris, the messenger of the gods who traveled the rainbow, the flower represents divine communication and the rainbow itself."

Here's my last flower offering, Papa and Mama. Hoping the iris will bring my message of love and longing for both of you--I miss you both so much. I will carry my grief like a badge of the great love we shared. The kind of love I will be able to share now that I am a parent myself. Please guide me and teach me... Until the day I cross the rainbow and meet you again...

Gloria's Garden No. 11 - Disa Diores. An orchid hybrid.

Papa and mama loved orchids. I don't think we had this variety. I remember the big pink cattleya orchids, usually used for corsages. I forget the other ones we had. But Papa and Mama would drive the extra mile to go to a friend's house willing to share a cutting or a pot. Papa would sometimes come home with driftwood he picked up somewhere. That following weekend, a new orchid would be setup at the garden. :)

Gloria's Garden No. 10 - Camassia. Must admit, no idea what this flower is. Looks very spider-y when I first saw the photo.

After a bit of web digging, found out that it is native to the Pacific Northwest, edible (in contrast to the white variety which is toxic), and were even traded historically by locals.

So much variety in these flowers, some of which I have not seen before. Makes me wonder what calendar Mama got this from and where! 🤔

Gloria's Garden No. 9 - Dahlia. Have you ever been awestruck by a flower before? Ok, most flowers have that effect on me I must admit 🤪 But DAHLIAS... Our neighbor back in Vancouver had the most beautiful dahlias I've ever seen. Well, that may have been my first time to see dahlias (I didn't even know what they were called back then, I think), thus the effect... but each year they bloom they had the same effect. I miss those flowers. And the old couple tending to them. They barely spoke English but they had the kindest smiles! And cutest little waves for Noah when we pass by. No wonder they grow such beautiful blooms. 🥰 Kindness begets beauty.

Gloria's Garden No. 8 - Tulips. The first time I think I saw tulips, or the earliest time I remember, was back in 2006. On a US concert tour with my choir, one of our stops that spring of 2006 was Chicago. And there were tulips everywhere! That was when tulips became my favourite. See, I even had them on my wedding day! Tulips in December? In the Philippines? Somehow it was possible.

Now I live in a place where I found an even deeper appreciation for these flowers. Where they put up a whole festival surrounding that short time (some guesswork at times as to when) that they are in full bloom. I mean, I get it. Planted in the fall only to be buried in deep ice and snow for months. Then, they grow beautifully around May when the ice has thawed out. But only for a few weeks to be appreciated. Then, they stay quiet and dormant until the next spring. What a life cycle. One has to appreciate the story behind such short lived beauty and what these flowers had to endure to get to that point. ❤️

Gloria's Garden No. 7 - Georgenburg sounds more like a place than a flower. One of my fave flowers to draw from the calendar cutouts. And what could be a pretty sight right now in the middle of a snowstorm. A ray of sunshine, a pop of color. One can dream.:)

Gloria' Garden No. 6 - Hydrangeas. We never had these flowers in our own garden. They were quite special as we'd only ever see them on vacations to cooler (temp-wise) places like Baguio or Tagaytay.

Now here in Ottawa, I've always been tempted to do a "cut and run" from the neighborhood bushes... but I always forget to bring scissors on my daily walks at spring/summer time. If Papa or Mama were here, that would've been done ages ago and we'd already have a thriving bush in our backyard. Snip! 👀😆
