Today is the first day of our festival!

Farewell, TACTICS Theatre...🎭

After 12 years of championing Ottawa's independent theatre scene, TACTICS Theatre Company takes its final bow with the Sunset Season at LabO Theatre, May 9–10.

✨ Experience three dynamic shows:
1️⃣ The Coven (a staged reading blending magical realism and intergenerational storytelling)
2️⃣ No More Mr. Rice Guy (a witty comedy about identity and ambition)
3️⃣ Nuit (an award-winning q***r party musical)

Today is the day! The first of our two day Sunset Season to celebrate the end of Tactics. We have a weekend full of amazing independent shows, a panel discussion and our Tactics Tribute (A Farewell Party).

This amazing local theatre event is one you will not want to miss, tickets for shows start at only $10 (or $5 for EXA, a performance installation) and 100% of ticket sales go back to the artists! Come see The Coven: A Staged Reading on May 9th at 6pm and May 10th at 7:30pm. Don’t miss the chance to see one of the first live performances of The Coven.

The Coven is an intergenerational magical realist play set between 1800s Guyana and modern-day Canada. The play follows Renette, the first free woman in her family, as she seeks vengeance against her former master. But the curse she casts carries a terrible cost—one that reaches her unborn child. In the present day, teenage Thea is navigating her parents' divorce and finds herself haunted by that same curse.

As past and present blur, The Shadow—a ghostly embodiment of the curse—emerges through contemporary dance and ensemble movement terrorizing generations. Only Thea can guide her family to heal generations of pain and uncover a path to forgiveness - before the darkness consumes them all.

With moments of blocking, choreography, and music, this unconventional staged reading brings the world of The Coven to life, and provides a window into this dynamic new work.

For the past 12 years, TACTICS Theatre Company has supported new local work in Ottawa. While this milestone is certainly something to celebrate, this will also be TACTICS’ final Sunset Season. Four performances from May 9-10 in LabO will help TACTICS say thank you and farewell.

We are so excited for our first event on Friday…a FREE panel with six incredible artists is something you do not want to miss. The panel is hosted by Kate Smith and will talk all about the future of theatre in Ottawa and independent theatre.

Rice Boy is your average high schooler with a dream - to go against the grain and make it big as a rapper. When his chance comes up in the form of a competition, he knows it’s his chance. With the vocabulary of a KUMON advanced program, join him on his journey to be the biggest, baddest rapper there ever was, without his mom finding out!
