Fresh tattoos can sometimes look “too dark,” but that contrast is intentional. As they heal, the blacks and darks soften and lighten, so it’s important to exaggerate that contrast while it’s fresh.

Before all the awards and accolades — before Ian had ever even heard of a tattoo shop or met a tattoo artist, because there was nothing like that where he lived — at 14 years old, he built his own tattoo machine

A fork. A Bic pen. A guitar string. A Walkman motor. He had to sharpen the needle on a stone by hand.
That was 1981

These photos are him at 17, still running the machine he built himself — one year before he ever got a chance to own a real professional machine

45 years later, he’s still tattooing strong. Follow for the next part of the story

This was 1981, and it’s a true part of Ian’s story — not a suggestion. Homemade machines aren’t safe, and nobody should tattoo outside of a professional, sterile studio. Please don’t try this at home.
