Flower Mountain
Moments in the zone.

I still remember days and nights on my board, cruising the streets looking for the next curb to grind or an acid drop to hit.

There was something about it, being free and being original felt like part of the game.

No rules. Just movement, instinct, and expression.

Working on this skateboard deck series has brought all of that back.

The same feeling exists in painting.

It’s not just technique, it’s rhythm, timing, and how you move through the work.

It becomes its own language.

This piece is a reflection of that space, where time drops away and you’re fully in it.

The first real skateboard I ever owned was a Steve Caballero blue dragon on a silver Powell Peralta deck. That board felt enormous. Like riding a surfboard down the street. Could not get them locally so had to go to a shop in MTL

I must have put a thousand miles on those Sims Street Wheels and completely destroyed my 169 Indy trucks that summer.

What I remember most wasn’t the tricks though. It was the freedom.

You could watch someone else skate the same curb, the same ramp, the same street… but it would never look the same. Everyone had their own style or their own line

That’s the beauty of skateboarding.

And honestly, it’s the same thing with painting.

The techniques exist. You can learn them. They’re written down and passed along.

But what gets created is always personal. It’s shaped by how you move through it.

This new skateboard deck series is a small tribute to that idea.

NEW Series: Skateboarding teaches you something most sports never will.

It makes you creative, adaptive, responsive, and free.

I wish I had a photo of me and my skateboard from when I was a kid.
I was a massive skateboard kid in the 80s. Leave the house in the morning and back way after lights out. Always on the hunt for the next great concrete wave to test my skills on.

There were no rules.
A lot like the creative process.

Every curb, halfpipe, stair set, and storm drain became something to challenge.

Working on this new skateboard deck series brought all of that back.

Honestly, it was a little scary and incredibly rewarding. I think they turned out pretty great but would love to hear what you think.

Hope you enjoy them.

P.S. The decks form a triptych when displayed together. More to come.

Brown’s Inlet, an Afternoon in The Glebe
24x38 Inch
Acrylic on Canvas
ID:535
This Brown’s Inlet piece is part of my Glebe Series, inspired by the walks I take along the Rideau Canal. I’m lucky that it’s all right outside my front door. Brown’s Inlet is a small offshoot of the canal and one of those calm, colourful spots you can enjoy in every season. It always seems to slow life down a bit.

My studio is only a few steps away, so this place is part of my routine. Kids fish and play here in the summer, dogs splash around and chase birds with zero success, and I often show up with a sketchbook looking for ideas. The light and colours always seem to do their thing. I love how the water changes with the sky and how the greens feel bright no matter the time of year.

In this painting, I wanted to capture that easy afternoon feeling. The bright blue water, the soft movement of the lily pads, the trees leaning toward the shoreline. This little corner of the Glebe inspires so much of my work and reminds me why I love painting scenes from right here in the city.

Please let me know what you think? Love the feedback and comments.

The Bank Street Bridge
The Glebe Ottawa Series
36x48 inches
Acrylic on Canvas - Available

This is the second piece in my Walk Along the Canal series, another moment caught along the Rideau Canal, but this time in the kind of morning light you only get for a few days each year.

The Bank Street Bridge is one of Ottawa’s most iconic landmarks, and easily one of the prettiest points along the canal. It’s also one of the four bridges that lead you straight into the Glebe, a neighbourhood that continues to shape this whole series.

On this particular morning, the sun was low enough to slide under the arches and light up the water in a way that stopped me in my tracks. Morning light like this is rare it hits for only a brief window at this time of year and I knew immediately I wanted to capture it.

So, like the first piece in the series, I pushed aside what I was working on and let this one take over.

This painting became a continuation of that feeling: quiet, bright, fleeting, and unmistakably Ottawa.

This piece is looking for its forever home.
If it speaks to you, I’d love to hear from you.

And as always, tell me what you think.

Fall Walk Along the Rideau Canal
30 x 40 inches — Available

I was working on a new series for an upcoming show when I decided to clear my head with a quick walk. That “20-minute break” turned into almost two hours of wandering along the Rideau Canal. I came home with pockets full of brilliant orange leaves and the feeling that fall in Ottawa had somehow paused itself—like the colours were suspended in time just long enough for us to really see them.

Back in the studio, I did what most artists do when inspiration hits: I pushed aside the pieces I was working on and started this one instead.

This is Fall Walk Along the Rideau Canal—a celebration of that moment of calm, colour, and unexpected inspiration.

This piece is looking for its next home. If it speaks to you, let me know.
Either way, I’d love to hear what you think.

Well how nice is this to come home to. Just back from an incredible Art trip to France and found a thoughtful article in the Glebe Report about my artwork and creative life here in Ottawa.

Reading it back, it’s a nice reminder that the Glebe really is a great place to build a studio and grow a creative life — surrounded by people who appreciate and support the arts.

Big thanks to -Lee Wallace for the kind write-up and to everyone at the Glebe Report for championing local artists. - https://www.andrewdmilneart.com/news_events/2025/11/8/local-artist-shares-the-beauty-of-the-glebe
