Orbost has a long history of industry, from times when settlers farmed maize using rough tracks and river transportation. It also has along history of creative culture; a home to artists, artisans and writers. Orbost Arts Centre is the creative delta for meeting and exhibiting.
Craft crosses over to fine art, performance and written work seamlessly. These boxed works resemble the assisted readymades of Marcel Duchamp from 1913, as does the interspersion of functional objects with artwork throughout the gallery.

Our new exhibition at OAC is 'See What I See' by the Town and Country Artists - 8 artists from across Victoria. Opening Sat 31st at 4pm, on until 25 Nov.

Ngaere Donald explains the inspiration for her 'Lunchtime break' series of paintings:
"Many years before mechanisation the Snowy river flats were teaming with Clydesdale horses ploughing up the fields. So come lunchtime on the Lochend side of the river and other areas no doubt, Max Croft told me the horses were unharnessed with just their big collars left on to wander down the banks of the Snowy river to drink as there weren't any water troughs. They walked down with no handlers as they would return for their nosebags full of feed.
Hundreds of horses could be seen up and down the river drinking, sometimes tossing their heads to throw back their burdensome collars.

For many years I envisioned this spectacle of large white-faced horses with their feathery legs, lined up along the riverbanks drinking and splashing in the water.
I spent many hours sketching ideas as there weren't many photographic references available. For my initial sketches trying to work out placement and composition of the horses, I borrowed from my many granddaughters' collection of toy horses as models, moving and juggling them into many positions. "

These are just a few of the paintings included in this brilliant exhibition, so be sure to come in to enjoy the whole show!
