Highlights from Visual Arts in the Valley 2026

Local artist and art teacher Kerrie Leishman hosted a unique 'drawing and mask making' workshop during the Visual Arts Festival weekend. Participants used natural found materials to incredible masks, and further extended their creativity with large charcoal drawings. Attendees loved the experience and created some incredible artworks.

"I had been expecting to make the mask itself, instead of just decorating a base, but the materials Kerrie provided were so unusual & interesting, I soon got involved. I liked that it was relaxed, & Kerrie encouraged us to do our own thing without following a particular model." stated one workshop attendee.

"Kerrie was really generous in providing such a wide range of materials for us to use & it was fun mixing the colours & textures. I loved the fact that we all produced very different works, but they still all had a fabulous, other-worldly kind of effect. Highly recommended." stated another participant.

Highlights from Visual Arts in the Valley 2026

Our Kids Art Workshop, hosted by local artist Annie McCarron, was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by many!

The children spent the morning expressing their creativity making friendship flags and colourful creative masks.

Annie is an Artist and Art Therapist ,and her passion for working with children is evident.

We look forward to hosting more kids art workshops in the future.

Highlights from Visual Arts in the Valley 2026

INSTALLATION - 'Cartography of Breath' by Isabelle Bribosia

This fabulous installation was created on the meadow behind The Friendly Inn in Kangaroo Valley, a site occasionally used as a helicopter landing area. It offered a sensitive interpretation of a place whose function is revealed only at rare moments. It revealed what usually remains invisible: the movements of air, the flows of energy, and the ephemeral traces that pass through a landscape.

Coloured movements emerge from the landscape and then fade away, like ripples or turbulence that the wind has momentarily made visible. Variations in grass height, translucent layers of colour, pathways that appeared between them invited visitors to move through the work at their own pace.

Highlights from Visual Arts in the Valley 2026

INSTALLATION - 'The River'

This intriguing installation was created in the Pony Club over the October Long Weekend as part of Visual Arts in the Valley 2026. This work was a collaborative effort by four talented artists with different views, backgrounds, styles and mediums, who came together and created a space together with the River as a starting point.

The River, containing the life-giving beauty within it, carrying every raindrop towards the bigger waters, to continue its eternal cycle.

The River holds multiple mythologies in different corners of the world. It carries the otherworldly: the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, such as the Rainbow Serpent; the sacred Ganges of India that purifies souls and grants liberation; or the dark, dangerous Tuonela River that separates the living from the dead in Finnish mythology.

Ironically, the clouds rolled in on the Saturday, bringing a very dramatic storm and an intense downpour that created a river around the installation - perfectly orchestrated!

Richard Morecroft, esteemed public broadcaster, conservationist, author and visual artist, passed away today in Berry.

In his extraordinary life he was best known as principal ABC news presenter for 25 years. But he was a man with a wide ranging career including as a practising artist and as a public facilitator of the arts.

Amongst his many contributions was his strong support of Sculpture in the Valley in 2025. For which we will remain truly thankful.

Join us for a fabulous evening of film and music with renowned pianist Robert Constable AM.

Sit back and enjoy some 1920’s Buster Keaton classics, while enjoying the live improvised accompaniment on piano by Robert Constable.

The program includes 2 films:
Cops (23 mins) and
Sherlock Junior (45 mins)

There will be a 20 minute interval in-between with refreshments.

Robert Constable is an Australian pianist, composer, teacher and music education leader. Throughout a long career he was head of music at the Universities of Newcastle (Australia), Auckland (New Zealand) and Canterbury (Christchurch New Zealand) and is regarded by his peers as a renowned musician and music leader.

The winner of the 2026 Visual Arts in the Valley PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD is:

"Refuge" by Pamela Dawn Pauline
Layered Photographic Artwork, printed onto Archival Fine Art Paper

This stunning work grabbed the attention and admiration of the many visitors to the Kangaroo Valley Art Prize over this long weekend, and was the clear winner of the people's choice award.

We congratulate Pamela for this stunning work.

This year we launched the Visual Arts in the Valley KID’S ART PRIZE, in collaboration with the local Kangaroo Valley Public School.

It was such a joy to see all the fantastic, creative artworks by children from Kindy through to Grade 6. Our Guest Judge Steven Harvey thoroughly enjoyed the process of reviewing all the works and selecting the prize winners.

The theme was “ Important people and places in my life” and we congratulate the prize recipients:

The Kangaroo Valley Hall was bursting at the seams with people attending the opening of Visual Arts in the Valley 2026. What a great way to celebrate the launch of this year's arts festival, and to see such a diverse array of artworks on display in the hall across the:
Kangaroo Valley Art Prize
Young & Emerging Art Prize &
Salon of Local Artists.

The evening was officially opened by Uncle Gerry, the Yuin Elder, followed by a brief talk by our Director Helen Lunn and Guest Curator Olivia Welch and prize announcement by our Guest Judge Steven Harvey.

The overall feeling of the night was a true celebration of 'community', which is rich in abundance in Kangaroo Valley. The exhibitions, support of the local businesses, the volunteers and artists all coming together to celebrate and support the arts.

The exhibitions, installations and the art trail (featuring 13 studios) remain open tomorrow through to 12pm. So still time to check it out!
