Who’s up for some Nuno Felting 🤗?
Here’s a fun wet felting technique to try: Nuno Felting involves layering carded wool between fabric layers to create an interesting ripple textured fabric. You can experiment with different fabrics - here I’m using the cotton muslin that I ice-dyed a couple of reels ago.
Here are the steps:
✨cut two pieces of fabric (allowing for shrinkage - my piece shrank by about 20%);
✨lay out a clean towel, a layer of bubble wrap, then place one of the fabric pieces on top;
✨pull fine layers from your carded wool, and lay on top of your fabric, slightly overlapping, all going in the one direction;
✨place a piece of tulle on top, then apply slightly soapy warm water, dampening all the wool. I’m using an old plastic bag to add the water;
✨remove the tulle, then apply another fine layer of carded wool, this time in the opposite direction. You’ll notice that I left part of the fabric free of the wool - this part will remain unfelted;
✨place tulle on top again, moisten again with the soapy water, making sure all layers are wet (but not overly so)!
✨use the plastic bag to gently rub on top of the layers (with tulle still in place). Keep doing this, rotating and turning your work over occasionally to ensure even felting;
✨once the wool fibres have started to mesh with the fabric, remove the tulle, tightly roll the bubble wrap and layers together, then roll firmly. A piece of non-slip mat is useful here. Again, rotate your work to ensure even felting and keep an eye on it - once the felting kicks in, your fabric can shrink fast;
✨when you’re happy with the amount of shrinkage, and the texture of your fabric, throw your bundled felted fabric onto your work surface a few times, then rinse in tepid water, gently squeezing out the excess water, before pulling your felted fabric back into shape, letting it dry on a clean towel.
Experimenting with different fabrics can yield all sorts of interesting results - the felted fabric can be embellished with embroidery, beading, needle felting, or can be used to make garments and accessories.
