This project attracted a lot of interest!
I recently posted a short video of my current knitting project on my stories, and it attracted a lot of interest, lovely comments and questions. I’ve also included more examples in this reel as well.
Let’s answer a few of the queries:
🧶What is this called?”
This is Entrelac Knitting. The word Entrelac comes from the French “entrelacer”, meaning “to interlock or interweave.” You may have also noticed a ribbed border on the first piece - this is worked after the Entrelac knitting is completed.
🧶”Are these knitted strips woven together?”
This was the most frequently asked question. Entrelac Knitting is made up entirely of knitted and purled stitches; no weaving or sewing is involved. The pattern builds up in tiers; you start with a foundation row of shapes (either tiny squares, rectangles or triangles, depending on the pattern). After completing one tier of shapes, you pick up stitches along their edges to start the next tier, which slants in a different direction. Sadly this is not a reversible pattern! The individual blocks are shaped using short rows, where you turn your work before finishing a full row. This allows the knitting to grow and connect seamlessly with neighboring blocks. It can be knitted flat for items like scarves, cushion covers, shawls, and blankets, or it can be knitted in the round for cowls. 🧶”Is It a Blanket?”
This particular piece of knitting is a triangular shawl.
🧶”Where can I find the pattern?
This pattern is called “Colour Rush,” designed by Sophia Minakais, and I found it in the book “Timeless Noro - Knit Shawls”.
🧶”What is this yarn?”
This is Noro Ito, a beautiful multi-coloured 10 ply/aran weight pure wool, available in enormous 200g balls.
