❌ Reduced agricultural production

🌱 HOW CAN WE CONSERVE LAND?

βœ… Plant and protect trees
βœ… Avoid overgrazing
βœ… Practise good farming methods
βœ… Control soil erosion
βœ… Protect natural vegetation
βœ… Avoid unnecessary cutting of trees
βœ… Use land according to its suitability

πŸ’‘ REMEMBER:
🌍 Good land use helps communities develop while protecting the environment for future generations.

πŸ“ QUICK QUIZ

1️⃣ What is land use?
2️⃣ Name three ways people use land.
3️⃣ Give two effects of poor land use.

🌱 GRADE 7 NATURAL SCIENCES | SOIL PROFILE πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡Ό

Have you ever wondered what is hiding beneath the soil in your garden or field? πŸ‘€πŸŒ

Today at πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡Ό Zim Homework Hub by MellyTrendz, we're learning about the SOIL PROFILE and the different layers that make up the soil.

πŸ“š What is a Soil Profile?

A soil profile is a vertical section through the soil showing its different layers.

🟀 THE MAIN SOIL LAYERS

1️⃣ TOPSOIL 🌱
The upper layer of soil. It is usually rich in humus and nutrients, and most plant roots grow here.

2️⃣ SUBSOIL 🟫
Found below the topsoil. It contains less humus and may contain more minerals.

3️⃣ WEATHERED PARENT MATERIAL πŸͺ¨
Contains partly broken-down rock material.

4️⃣ BEDROCK ⛰️
The solid rock found beneath the soil layers.

🌾 WHY IS A SOIL PROFILE IMPORTANT?

βœ… Helps us understand the composition of soil.
βœ… Helps farmers understand the soil available for crops.
βœ… Shows where plant roots can grow.
βœ… Helps us understand how soil develops.
βœ… Shows the relationship between soil and the rock beneath it.

πŸ’‘ REMEMBER:
🌱 Topsoil is generally the most fertile layer because it contains more humus and nutrients.
πŸͺ¨ Bedrock is the solid rock beneath the soil.

πŸ“ QUICK QUIZ

1️⃣ What is a soil profile?
2️⃣ Name the main layers of a soil profile.
3️⃣ Which layer is usually richest in humus?
4️⃣ Which layer contains solid rock?
5️⃣ Why is studying soil profiles important to farmers?

πŸͺ¨ GRADE 7 NATURAL SCIENCES | WEATHERING πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡Ό

Have you ever wondered how large rocks slowly break down into smaller pieces? πŸ€”πŸŒ

Today's lesson looks at WEATHERING: TYPES & EFFECTS and explains how rocks are broken down at or near the Earth's surface.

πŸ“š In today's lesson, learners will discover:

1️⃣ Physical Weathering β˜€οΈπŸ’§πŸŒ¬οΈ
Rocks break into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition.

2️⃣ Chemical Weathering πŸ’§πŸŒ§οΈ
Rocks are changed or broken down when they react with substances such as water and acids.

3️⃣ Biological Weathering 🌱🐜
Living organisms, including plant roots and burrowing animals, can help break down rocks.

🌍 Effects of Weathering:

βœ… Helps form soil
βœ… Breaks large rocks into smaller particles
βœ… Changes landscapes over time
βœ… Releases minerals into the soil
βœ… Contributes to the formation of sediments

πŸ’‘ REMEMBER:
πŸͺ¨ Weathering breaks rocks down.
🌊 Erosion moves the broken material away.

πŸ“ QUICK QUIZ

1️⃣ What is weathering?
2️⃣ Name the three types of weathering.
3️⃣ Give one example of physical weathering.
4️⃣ How can plant roots cause weathering?
5️⃣ What is one difference between weathering and erosion?

πŸŒ‹πŸ’§ HOW DOES WATER GET HOT UNDERGROUND AND COME BACK UP AS A HOT SPRING? ♨️

Have you ever wondered how a hot spring can produce warm or even extremely hot water naturally? πŸ€”

Here’s the amazing journey of the water! πŸ‘‡

🌧️ 1. Rainwater goes underground
Rainwater slowly seeps through soil, rocks and cracks beneath the Earth's surface.

⬇️ 2. It travels deep underground
The water can move through cracks and spaces in rocks, sometimes reaching great depths.

πŸ”₯ 3. The water gets heated
Deep underground, temperatures are much higher because of Earth's internal heat. The surrounding hot rocks transfer heat to the water.

⬆️ 4. The heated water rises
Hot water is less dense than cooler water, so it tends to rise. Pressure and underground cracks also provide pathways for the water to move upward.

♨️ 5. A hot spring forms!
Eventually, the heated water reaches the Earth's surface, creating a natural hot spring.

πŸͺ¨ And there's another fascinating part!
As the water travels through rocks, it can dissolve minerals. These minerals can influence the spring's colour, smell and chemical composition.

🌍 So the journey is:

🌧️ RAINWATER
⬇️
πŸ’§ UNDERGROUND
⬇️
πŸ”₯ HEATED BY EARTH'S INTERNAL HEAT
⬆️
πŸ’¦ RISES THROUGH ROCKS & CRACKS
⬆️
♨️ HOT SPRING!

Nature has its own underground heating and circulation system! 🀯🌍

πŸ’¬ Did you know this is how hot springs work?
