Call for Panelists: Mitambo International Theatre Festival 2024 – Online Conference

The Zimbabwe Theatre Academy, in collaboration with the University of Zimbabwe’s Department of Creative Media and Communication and the International Theatre Institute, invites expressions of interest from individuals who are passionate about the performing arts.

This call is for the upcoming Mitambo International Theatre Festival, which will take place from the 26th to the 28th of November 2024. This year's conference will explore key themes at the intersection of theatre, culture, and innovation, bringing together thought leaders, practitioners, and academics from across the globe.

Student Exchange Program between Zimbabwe Theatre Academy and Cirque-En-Ciel (Switzerland)

This collaboration is designed to promote cross-cultural understanding, foster mutual learning, and enhance the artistic and cultural skills of students from both Zimbabwe and Switzerland.

Through this exchange, students from the two institutions will engage in a series of performances and workshops, bringing their unique talents and creative expressions to various communities in Zimbabwe.

The initiative not only enriches the participants' educational experiences but also creates opportunities for cultural exchange and artistic growth, benefiting both the students and the communities they serve.

This collaboration would not have been possible without the invaluable support of Reps Theatre - Harare, Zimbabwe, a vibrant hub for nurturing young creatives. Additionally, the partnership has been greatly supported by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe - NACZ and the of Switzerland to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, whose contributions have been instrumental in facilitating this exchange and fostering cultural growth between Zimbabwe and Switzerland.

Zimbabwe Theatre Academy will host young students from La Compagnie Cirque-en-Ciel and KUNOS Circus Theater, Switzerland for an artistic exchange program.

This exchange program seeks to promote cross-cultural understanding, foster mutual learning, and enhance the artistic and cultural expertise of participants from both Zimbabwe and Switzerland.

If you have or know young people who can benefit from this exchange, please reach out to us. We can offer workshops and performances “The Nugget”.

The Zimbabwe Theatre Academy holds accreditation with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development and is registered by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe The Academy imparts practical theatre expertise to budding and established theatre professionals in Zimbabwe.

Kunos Cirque-En-Ciel Company orchestrates tours that allow its most proficient students to showcase their productions across diverse global locales. KUNOS La Compagnie Cirque-en-Ciel has graced Zimbabwe on two occasions during the Mitambo International Theatre Festival (2019 & 2023) in Harare, with the patronage of the Swiss Embassy in Zimbabwe.

I am pleased to share that I have been elected to the executive council of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the world’s largest performing arts organization, under UNESCO's patronage.

Special mention goes to the following: National Arts Council of Zimbabwe - NACZ and the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture for providing the travel grant; Gertrude Munhamo, Thandolwenkosi Ndlovu, Kundai Nqobani, Hildah Kagwambo, Nathaniel Douglas Allenby, Bridget Paradza, Gladmore Tinashe Musipani, Getrude Vimbayi Munhamo and Samatha Ndlovu for their financial contribution towards the trip.

The purpose of the International Theatre Institute is to promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts in order to consolidate peace and friendship between peoples, to deepen mutual understanding and to increase creative co-operation between all people in the theatre arts.

As part of the Theatre for Climate Justice project, we've been deeply engaged in the research and devising process with the talented 2024 student cohort and alumni at the Zimbabwe Theatre Academy. 🎭📚

Our journey continues with extensive research into how climate change and El Niño impact Zimbabweans. The effects are profound, with extreme weather patterns leading to droughts, food insecurity, and disruptions in daily life. These challenges are felt most acutely by rural communities, where livelihoods depend on agriculture, and the unpredictable climate has made survival increasingly difficult. 🌍🔥
To prepare for our upcoming performances, our ensemble started the devising process by building a common language and vocabulary that will be woven into the fabric of our show. This shared foundation allows us to tell a cohesive story that resonates with the communities we aim to reach.
