Lesson #1: Finding Your Core Idea

Before structure, format, or dialogue, every screenplay needs a solid foundation: a strong, central idea.

In Hollywood, the best ideas are often "high-concept"—simple, visual, and easy to pitch. They answer the question, "What is your movie about?" in one compelling sentence.

🎬 What Makes a Great Logline?

It's about a PROTAGONIST who has a QUEST.

Let's break down a classic: "The Fugitive"

Logline: A doctor, falsely accused of his wife's murder, escapes custody and goes on the run to find the real killer.

✅ Protagonist: A doctor (smart, resourceful)

✅ Quest: Find the real killer

✅ Central Conflict: He's a hunted man trying to become the hunter.

Other brilliant, simple ideas:
• Dinosaurs brought back to life (Jurassic Park)
• A thief who steals ideas from dreams (Inception)
• An astronaut stranded on Mars (The Martian)

Powerful truth from Moses Nkomo today that every filmmaker needs to hear:

We often blame the government or complain that "there are no adequate mechanisms to protect our films" in Zimbabwe. But here is the reality:

Copyright is a PRIVATE RIGHT. The duty to enforce your rights rests squarely with YOU, the rights holder.

Your film is your private property. If you don't put an alarm on your car, you can't blame others if it's stolen.

➡️ What does this mean for us?

🔥 PROACTIVITY IS KEY: Use watermarks on screeners, register your scripts with formal bodies (even though copyright is automatic), and use clear copyright notices.

🔥 ENFORCEMENT IS POSSIBLE: If someone steals your work, it's not the end of the story. The law does provide mechanisms to fight back.

Let's stop blaming and start protecting. Our creative work is our property. Let's guard it fiercely.
