Man who killed 7 in Redcliff spear and knife attacks ‘mentally unstable’

KWEKWE – A man who killed seven people in a knife and spear rampage in Redcliff is mentally unfit to stand trial, a court heard on Monday.

Thubeihle Kheshow, 26, was examined by two psychiatrists on the orders of a court and they both returned a verdict that he has mental health problems.

Kheshow has since been committed to Mlondolozi Mental Health Prison in Bulawayo for further management and treatment.

“Two doctors examined him under the Mental Health Act and discovered that he is not well,” Kwekwe district prosecutor Yeukai Mugumba told magistrate Florence Nago.

Describing Kheshow as a danger to society, Mugumba continued: “If he does not go on trial owing to his illness, a special verdict will be handed down by the High Court. A special verdict can either find one not guilty or guilty, depending on the gravity of the matter.”

Kheshow was charged with seven counts of murder, attempted murder and r**e after a frenzied early morning attack on his victims in Redcliff’s Stone Clare suburb.

Kheshow’s mental health problems were already known to his family and community. After he became violent at around 3AM on October 9, his aunt took him to an Apostolic sect shrine nearby in the hope prayers can heal him.

The court heard that when he got to the shrine, Kheshow became even more violent, uprooting trees and pushing stationary vehicles causing congregants to subdue him and tie him with a rope.

Kheshow broke free sometime before sunrise and returned home where he armed himself with three spears, a kitchen knife and an axe before going to his uncle’s house where he broke down the front door to gain entry.

His uncle and other relatives fled through the bedroom window, leaving four children sleeping in the dining room.

They later returned home and found the children with multiple stab wounds. Three of the children aged seven years, three years and seven months later died from their injuries.

The parents sought refuge at a police officer’s house nearby and the suspect followed them and stabbed the cop in the back with a spear, injuring him.

He fatally stabbed a 33-year-old man and further seriously injured three other people. One of the three injured later died in hospital.

Kheshow returned to his house and killed two women aged 56 and 86 to death before ra**ng his uncle’s wife.

A prominent legal advisor in Zvishavane was admitted to the hospital after consuming poison at his ex-wife's residence after being denied access to children.

The Herald reports that Mr Promise Mariba visited Angeline Phiri last week Monday with the intention of seeing their two children but he was denied access.

A heated argument ensued with the in-laws saying Mariba had to pay lobola first for him to have access to the children.

Witnesses said Mariba then threatened to hang himself at their gate but his in-laws did not take him serious.

He then left, briefly, and came back with rat poison but his ex-wife still did not bow to his demands. Mariba then consumed the poison and was rushed to the hspital.

Mariba told The Herald that he was now recovering from home after being discharged. He said:

But I am ok now . . . they were refusing to release my kids, so there was no reason for me to live after spending a couple of months without seeing my own kids.

I did not want to take them for good, I only wanted to have access to my kids for the weekend but they have been refusing so I had to take that decision (drinking poison).

Mariba who is now a bachelor after three failed marriages claimed that the other two ex-wives released the kids but this other one was adamant he would not see them. He said:

I wanted to have my kids for a while and go to church with them for a prayer but she were conniving with her parent to deny me access to my own kids, so I went to buy some rat poison which I then consumed in front of them in protest.

He added that he over-reacted and is grateful to God that he is alive and that he had temporary access to his kids as they are already back with their mother.

Former Farmers Receive US$1 Million From Zimbabwe Govt.
==//==//==//==//==//==//==//==//==//==

White farmers who were ejected from farms during the fast track land reform last week received the first paycheque of US$1 million in the form of a dividend for the 12.5 percent equity the Government gave them in Kuvimba Mining House.

Kuvimba, initiated by the Government and led by private investors, declared a cumulative dividend of US$5.2 million to shareholders, 12 months being transformed from the aggregation of struggling mining operations.

Through their lobby group, the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU), the former farmers said the decision by the Government to allocate the white farmers shares in Kuvimba Mining House, demonstrated the State’s commitment to resolving a decades-long conflict over land.

CFU president, Andrew Pascoe, noted that while the US$1 million dividend payment was only a tiny fraction of the finances required to pay off the full compensation amount, it represented a “seed that will germinate” into bigger things.

Pascoe indicated intended beneficiaries were initially sceptical about the Government's decision to give shares to the white former commercial farmers who lost their land under the land reform initiative.

He observed, however, that the distribution of the dividend last week went a long way to prove the government's commitment to resolving the issue.

He added that the compensation deed signed last year between the government and the farmers was driven by a desire to put aside “our differences and work together and find the best way forward to bring an end to a conflict that has raged for over the last 20 years”. He added:

_It is undeniable that the conflict has caused immense hardships for all of us Zimbabweans. The signing of that (compensation) deed was, from my perspective, a momentous occasion._

_Going forward from this, the commitment being shown by the Government to find the funds needed to pay the compensation is demonstrated clearly through the shares allocated

It comes after leaked CCTV appeared to show him kissing an aide in his departmental office.

The images, published by The Sun, show Mr Hancock in an embrace with former lobbyist Gina Coladangelo on 6 May - more than a week before social distancing rules were eased around close contact indoors for people from separate households.
