Thank you, my love, my friends, my colleagues and my family, for the beautifully heartwarming messages today.

40 turns around the sun.  Walking many paths you learn; to find the bravery to reject things that no longer sit well in your bones, to re-embrace some because you realize, in your spirit, that that is who you were all along. And to long for those your body has never experienced— for your soul craves those licks.

As I step into this new decade, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude:
•for another day to pursue spiritual growth, bodily health, & human connection.
•for my love who has walked beside me with grace, care & presence these past two years; for the family I was born with, & the family I have chosen.
•for the friends, now in spirit, who left me beautiful gifts to build worlds of wonder upon the human spirit and our incredible capacity for change.

I am in awe of what I have achieved & what I have been enabled to do. I am in awe of the ancestors and Musikavanhu, who know how to locate a soul even when she has drifted in a miasma of confusion and self-immolation—guiding her back toward her center, giving clarity and balance.

I hope I don’t lose this new streak of being present with myself & embracing who I am. That I get to see many more suns. While this life is not easy, it is meant for living—for us to take as many turns as possible until we become who we were truly meant to be. I hope for strength, kindness, & love continue to find me, both within & without.

For me, 40 is about permission to lean into making my own rules—to breaking them while following them fearlessly as I forge my own path, just as I have done since the day I was born. There is no blueprint for your life; you draft the blueprint as you keep moving.

So, even when I don’t feel a hundred percent, I smile for the little girl within who has survived so many battles & carries scars no one sees. She triumphs over her own shortcomings to continue becoming. She is the one who leads herself through thorny paths to emerge into new lights.

40 is being the Queen of my own universe—and running with it.

Friends, I wanted to take a moment to speak about a fellow artist, Rumbidzai Tapfuma, who is currently facing significant health challenges and needs our support towards her medical bills.
I've had the privilege of working alongside Rumbi before, and I was always deeply inspired by her incredible dedication to improving her craft and her unwavering commitment to growing as an artist. Her passion and hard work were truly infectious.
For those of you who are able, I encourage you to show your support for Rumbi in any way you can. A few friends of Rumbi are organizing a Fundraiser for her at Nhaka Gallery tomorrow from 2 pm till late. More details on the flyer. You can find more information at the fundraiser or ask to be put in touch with Rumbi there. The article linked here provides further details on the challenges she is facing: https://www.heraldonline.co.zw/rumbi-wengoma-seeks-medical-support/.
Rumbi, please know that you are in my thoughts and the thoughts of many within our artistic community. We are sending you strength and wishing you a swift and full recovery. May your health issues be alleviated, and may you soon be back on your feet, doing the artistic work that you are so passionate about and that brings so much joy to others.
Let's rally around Rumbi and show her the solidarity and support she needs during this challenging time. Every little bit helps.

World Theatre Day from our Chairperson:

When Gertrude Pfumayaramba, ITI-Zimbabwe's Developments Officer, asked me to deliver a World Theatre Day address, she acknowledged the power of the ITI Worldwide message, but insisted on hearing my personal perspective as Chairperson of ITI Zimbabwe. Initially, I felt the familiar pang of time constraints, another demand on an already stretched schedule. However, upon reflection, I realized I had much to say. In our polarized information age, where taking a stand often silences opposing voices, I've largely allowed my work to speak for itself. Today, I'm grateful for the opportunity to articulate my thoughts.
My connection to Zimbabwean theatre began nearly twenty years ago, during a period of intense national upheaval. Economic instability, cultural clashes between generations, and rapid social change created a challenging environment. The sector was in crisis, grappling with dwindling resources, poor working conditions, and a pervasive sense of decline. Practitioners faced misinterpretations and dismissive labels, yet we persisted, driven by the hope of a brighter future.
For me, theatre evolved from a simple outlet to a vessel for my nascent dreams, and ultimately, a means of survival. The journey has been fraught with hardship, heartbreak, and despair, reflecting the enduring struggle within Zimbabwean theatre. We’ve constantly fought for elusive goals, while also celebrating the moments of triumph.
Human history is often marked by relentless adversity. Yet, theatre practitioners resist being confined. We refuse to succumb to challenges, harnessing theatre to explore ideas, uphold ideals, and engage with our audiences. We use it to entertain, heal, and inspire.
Any serious practitioner knows the value of failure. Through fearless exploration and world-building, we learn from our own missteps and those of others. Theatre provides this crucial space for growth.
In a world plagued by injustice and inhumanity, theatre offers a lifeline. When anger is insufficient, and action seems impossible, theatre can provide a welcoming, non-judgmental space for equality and possibility. It is a place where a simple 'yes' can initiate personal and societal change, opening a window to hope.
Therefore, let us all say ‘yes’ to theatre. In our unique ways, let us keep this ancient and sacred practice alive and vibrant.

Happy World Theatre Day.
