Shamy Sikalenge, a YouTuber and tourism enthusiast originally from Binga, has spent years using his lens to capture the beauty, culture, and untold stories of Zimbabwe's premier tourist destinations.

But now he is setting his sights closer to home on Binga itself.

Through his YouTube channel Official Shamy, Shamy has built a following by showcasing the magic of Victoria Falls and beyond. Yet his heart has always carried the pulse of Binga, the land of the Zambezi, the rhythm of the Tonga drum, and the hidden gems that lie waiting to be discovered by the world.

The Big Idea: An Exploration Expedition Like No Other

Shamy recently shared an ambitious plan with his followers. A collaborative exploration journey from Victoria Falls into the heart of Binga District. The goal is to uncover and showcase the hidden treasures of this beautiful region while creating a shared adventure with like minded explorers.

The proposed journey includes stopovers at Kamativi and Tinde, with a visit to the historic Ndabukilwa area.

From there two possible final destinations are being considered.

Option 1 is Mlibizi where the team can enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Kariba, taste Zambezi bream, and capture stunning riverside photos.

Option 2 goes further to Binga Centre where the group will have accommodation and spend time exploring the district more deeply, including interactions with local communities.

Accommodation in these areas is affordable and the journey promises authentic encounters with local people who hold the keys to Binga's rich cultural and historical heritage.

A Call to the Community: Your Place in the Spotlight

This is more than a road trip. It is an opportunity to put Binga on the tourism map. Shamy is inviting volunteers, content creators, cultural custodians, and anyone with a story to tell to join the movement.

In the heart of Binga, a remarkable story of transformation is unfolding one batch of delicious baked goods at a time.

Bina Zunda stands as one of the proud beneficiaries of the Ministry of Youth and the Amalima Loko Youth Empowerment Program, a life-changing initiative that is reshaping the futures of young people in Matabeleland North.

Her journey began with professional baking training conducted at Binga High School. With passion and determination, she immersed herself in learning the craft, mastering the art of turning simple ingredients into mouthwatering creations. Upon successfully completing her course, Bina Zinda took a bold step forward she travelled to Bulawayo for industrial attachment, where she gained invaluable hands-on experience and sharpened her skills under professional guidance.

When her attachment ended, Bina Zunda returned home to Binga, carrying not just certificates, but a dream. With the unwavering support of her husband, she took a leap of faith and established her own baking business. What started as classroom training has since blossomed into a thriving enterprise that is not only transforming her life but also creating new opportunities for her family.

Today, Bina Zunda is known across the community for her wide variety of baked products. Her menu features:

In the wake of sudden flash floods that swept through Simbala Village in Tinde Ward, Binga District, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a powerful story of community solidarity and organized response has emerged alongside the loss.

While eight households saw their homes washed away by rising waters, the rapid action of neighbors and local residents ensured that no lives were lost. Elders and children alike found refuge—some climbing trees, others fleeing to higher ground—in a collective act of resilience.

The destruction was severe. Families lost nearly all their possessions, with many only managing to salvage essential documents such as IDs and birth certificates. For several school-going children and vulnerable community members—including an 83-year-old elder and a one-year-old infant—the disaster threatened not just shelter, but also education, food security, and stability.

In response, a coordinated relief effort was quickly mobilized. On Thursday, January 22, a high-level delegation led by Chief Superintendent T. Nehwaswi, Officer Commanding ZRP Hwange District, visited Simbala Village to assess needs and deliver immediate support. The team included representatives from the Zimbabwe National Army, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, Binga Rural District Council, REPSI, ORAP, the Ministry of Health and Child Care, ZIMPARKS, and local leadership.

The delegation distributed food hampers and essential household items to affected families, offering both material aid and moral support during a traumatic time.

Ordas Munsaka, speaking on behalf of the Binga District Development Coordinator, assured the community that further assistance—especially building materials—is being organized to help families rebuild. He also emphasized that continued donations are urgently needed to support full recovery.

This flood is a sobering reminder of the increasing vulnerability of communities to extreme weather. Yet, in Simbala, it has also shown how coordinated action, compassion, and local leadership can bring hope amid hardship.

District authorities and partner organizations have reaffirmed their commitment to walking with these families through recovery—proving that even when waters rise, solidarity runs deeper.

Saba Ward Kicks Off Rural Tree Planting Drive in Support of National Programme

SABA WARD, Binga – In a vibrant display of community environmental stewardship, Saba Ward today joined the Government of Zimbabwe’s National Tree Planting Programme through an initiative led by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS). Under the guidance of the Forestry Commission and the Office of the District Development Coordinator (DDC), residents gathered to plant trees and commit to forest restoration.

The event saw participation from a wide cross-section of the community, including the Ward Councillor, school heads, village heads, lead farmers, youth, volunteers, and local residents. In his keynote address, DDC Assistant Mr. Munsaka Odasi urged the community to take ownership of reforestation efforts, emphasizing that sustaining the environment is a shared responsibility. He was pictured leading by example, planting one of the first trees of the day.

This activity is part of a broader CRS-supported programme implemented by ZRCS, which is extending the government’s National Tree Planting Programme into rural communities to promote climate resilience and sustainable land use. A Plea from the Craftsmen: Seeking Shelter—and a Fair Market—for Binga’s Finest Woodcarvers

Along the scenic Binga-Dete road, in Saba-Lubanda ward under Chief Saba, lies a hidden gem: Chemba Craft Centre. For thirty years, since its founding in April 1995, this center has been home to some of the finest woodcarvers in Binga—artisans whose hands transform local timber into breathtaking works of art. But behind the skill and beauty lies a struggle that has gone unseen for decades.

Despite faithfully paying council licenses year after year, Chemba Craft Centre has never received donations or formal recognition from any relevant authority. Their workspace—a fragile, weathered shed—has become a symbol of their enduring yet overlooked legacy.

On a rain-soaked afternoon in December, Vice Chairperson Peter Munsaka stood anxiously outside that very shed, not from choice, but from fear. As the downpour beat against the aging structure, he and several members watched, worrying the roof might collapse. There was no safety, no dignity—just a group of artists fearing for their workspace and their livelihoods.

In that moment, Peter turned to his senior with a pressing question: Had they ever written to the District Council to request help?

*The Market’s Uncertain Tide*

Beyond the fragile roof lies another hardship: an unpredictable market. Some seasons bring a boom, with visitors flocking to the roadside centre. Other times, sales slow to a trickle. Worse still, as Peter explains, are the middlemen who come offering painfully low prices for pieces they intend to resell at a steep profit elsewhere.

“We need more than just a roof,” says Peter. “We need a platform—a real connection to buyers beyond our borders. A way to reach those who truly value our craft, not just those looking to make a quick profit from our labour.”

Today, the members of Chemba Craft Centre are not pointing fingers. They are simply asking—with hope and humility—for the means to secure their craft and their future.

Their request is two-fold:

1. 20 IBR zinc sheets to build a sturdy, flat-roofed shed where they can work and sell their pieces without fear, rain or shine.
2. A bridge to the wider market—through partnerships, exhibitions, or digital platforms—so their art can earn its true value and reach appreciative audiences far and wide.

Of the ten talented members, only six remain at the center today. The other four have been forced to seek work in nearby townships to make ends meet. Yet, those who stay continue to carve—lions, bowls, maps, stools, plates, trays, drums and totems—each piece telling a story of patience, culture, and resilience.

Chemba Craft Centre is more than a business. It is a sanctuary of tradition, a classroom of craft, and a pillar of the Chemba community. What they create here isn’t just curio—it’s heritage.

*Binga Local Board to Allocate Residential and Commercial Stands This December*

The Binga Local Board has announced a limited allocation of residential and commercial stands for individuals on its Housing Waiting List. The allocation will take place on December 11th and 12th, 2025, at the Board’s Office from 0900 to 1645 hours.

The stands will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with special preference given to disabled individuals and first-time home seekers.

To be eligible, applicants must:

· Be on the Board’s Housing Waiting List with a current renewal receipt.
· Register their interest at the office before the allocation date.
· Bring a full deposit fee (amount to be confirmed upon registration).
· Present a valid ID and proof of application receipt.

The available stands and their prices are as follows:

· High Density: 200-250m² at $15/m²
· Medium Density: 500-800m² at $10/m²
· Low Density: ~3500m² at $4/m²
· Commercial: 150-360m² at $28/m²

Prospective applicants are urged to ensure they meet all requirements and have the necessary documents ready for the December allocation.
