The differences between the flu and the common cold

While the common cold is caused by any of several viruses (rhinovirus, corona virus, respiratory syncytial virus and others....) the flu is distinctively caused by the influenza virus. If caught early, we can treat the flu with Oseltamivir (aka Tamiflu) which can shorten flu symptoms by stopping the influenza virus from dividing.
Best way of preventing the flu. The flu vaccine, the influenza vaccine works by exposing our immune system to bits of influenza virus, thus ramping up our immune cells against the virus before the true infection occurs. After the vaccine, it takes our immune system about 2 weeks to produce antibodies against the virus, so the earlier we vaccine the better.
Importantly, in neither the cold nor the flu are antibiotics effective( X). Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, not viral infections, which both the cold and the flu are. In fact taking antibiotics in either case can be downright dangerous, exposing the body to its side, wiping the gut of good bacteria that digest food, and most pointedly, breeding bacterial resistance. The key with the flu is to get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water and nutritious food, and seek medical care if not improving. Do not take antibiotics.
