UPDATE: REVISED “BUDGET” MUSIC VIDEO BY YO MAPS — ZAM POSITION

Monday, 11 May 2026

The Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) wishes to update members, the music industry, and the general public on latest developments concerning the “Budget” music video by Mr. Elton Mulenga, popularly known as Yo Maps.

1. Background and Developments

Following recent public debate over certain scenes in the original video, ZAM received communication from Mr. Mulenga (Yo Maps) who informed the Association's President, Mr. Brian Bwembya on Wednesday 6th May 2026 that the video would soon be replaced. This signals that the artist has heard the concerns raised by fans, the church, the Association, and other stakeholders.

As at Friday 8th May 2026, ZAM and other stakeholders noted that the sections of the video that sparked national debate have now been blurred on YouTube. While a full replacement of the original video remains pending due to platform-related restrictions reported by the artiste’s publishers, an edited version has been made available. ZAM highly recommends that TV stations begin to play the edited version which completely does not have the scenes in question.

2. ZAM’s Position

ZAM acknowledges this step as a constructive response to public concern and a gesture of responsibility. The blurring of contentious scenes provides a basis for continued dialogue. However, the Association still expects a complete replacement with the fully edited version once platform constraints are resolved.

ZAM reiterates that it exists to support, protect, and guide artistes. The Association does not oppose creative expression, but upholds its mandate to ensure that artistic works reflect Zambia’s cultural, Christian, and family values.

3. Key Lessons and Way Forward

This matter has provided important lessons for the industry:

i. Responsibility and Response: The artiste’s willingness to revise the video is welcomed. It demonstrates accountability to audiences and national values.

ii. Respectful Engagement: Public disagreements must be handled with maturity and mutual respect. ZAM will not publicly attack artistes, and the Association expects the same regard when it raises matters of industry concern.

iii. Balancing Freedom and Responsibility: ZAM strongly upholds artistic freedom. That freedom must, however, be exercised with sensitivity to the social impact of content accessed by homes, schools, churches, and national audiences.

iv. Need for Clearer Standards: Recent events highlight the need for ZAM to strengthen internal systems. Going forward, the Association will circulate its code of conduct to all members, improve member engagement, and provide clearer guidance on content that may conflict with national values.

4. Commendations and Calls to Action

ZAM commends the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) for its 6 May 2026 guidance to broadcasters on content alignment with Zambia’s cultural values. We further call upon the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) and other regulators to enhance monitoring and guidance on digital and online content standards.

5. Commitment to Unity and Dialogue

ZAM remains open to dialogue with Yo Maps, his management, and all artistes. We recognize his significant contribution to Zambia’s music industry and the pride his work brings to many fans. At the same time, we encourage all practitioners to embrace correction where necessary, respect industry structures and leaders, and uphold the moral expectations of the society they influence.

This moment will be used not to divide, but to build. ZAM will intensify engagement with artistes, managers, producers, publishers, broadcasters, regulators, churches, and other stakeholders to promote a music sector that is creative, responsible, united, and respected.

6. Appreciation

ZAM expresses gratitude to the National Arts Council, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, the Ministry of Information and Media, the church, the public, and all industry stakeholders for the support rendered to the Association during this period of engagement. We appreciate their continued commitment to a professional and responsible Zambian music sector.

ZAM remains committed to unity, reconciliation, artistic excellence, and moral responsibility.

Have a goodnight and thank you all for your attention!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO THE MOTHERS OF ZAM

To every mother in the Zambia Association of Musicians —

We see you.

We see you writing songs at 2am after putting babies to bed.
We see you loading instruments with a toddler on your hip.

We see you performing and dancing on the different stages and platforms around Zambia and the world at large.
We see you leading worship with morning sickness, mixing sound with school fees on your mind, and still showing up to ministry with excellence and grace.

You are not “just” mothers. You are culture-shapers. The first voice your children hear is yours — in lullabies, in prayer, in praise. You’re raising the next generation of psalmists, producers, and ministers right from your living room.

ZAM honors you today. The music of this nation carries your fingerprints. Your sacrifice is not unseen. Your strength is not unsung.

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” Proverbs 31:25

Thank you for mothering Zambia with your gift of music and your grit.

Keep singing. Keep raising. Keep shining.

Kindly mention that artistic mother you know, make them feel proud and happy.

From my heart to yours,
Chomba Lesa - Malembeka
Secretary General
Zambia Association of Musicians

see you

Today, we take a trip down memory lane to honor one of the true pioneers of Zambian hip-hop and raga, the late, great Keith Mutale, affectionately known by many as "Mukulumpe."

As a key member of the iconic Muvi Posse Band in the 1990s, Keith was at the forefront of a musical revolution. At a time when Congolese Rhumba dominated our airwaves, Keith and his peers provided a fresh, local alternative that gave Zambian youth a voice and a sound to call their own.

Keith’s influence is etched into the history of our industry through timeless tracks that still resonate today:

"I G*t U": His classic collaboration with Betty Bulo remains a fan favorite.

"Pyange Pyange": A song that showcased his unique style and lyrical prowess.

"Gun Culture": Keith was part of the team that made history with this Maiko Zulu (St Micheals then) track, marking the first time a Zambian song was nominated for a prestigious Kora Award.

Beyond the stage, Keith was a man of deep social conviction. He believed in the power of music to change lives, mobilizing youth groups like TBAK in 1999 to advocate for early education and healthy living. He didn't just entertain; he led.

Though he passed away in March 2020, his contribution to popularizing hip-hop in Zambia remains a foundation for the artists we celebrate today. We remember his energy, his collaborations with greats like Maiko Zulu, and his unwavering commitment to the Zambian sound.

What is your favorite Keith Mutale memory or song? Share with us in the comments as we celebrate a true legend!

Hello ZAM Family!

The Independent Broadcasting Authority - IBA, just sent out a reminder for everyone making music, music videos, playing music or showing videos on TV.

We will try and break down what the IBA statement says in the simplest form ever for all to understand.

As artists and DJs, you have the power to shape how people think, especially our kids! To keep our industry strong and professional, here is what you need to know:

We are Zambians and MUST Respect Our Roots,
with that said, the IBA wants to make sure the music we play matches Zambian values and culture. Our songs should reflect who we are as a people.

If you are putting out a music video or a movie,
TV Stations must preview everything before it airs.
Make sure your videos are suitable for everyone to watch (family-friendly).

Producers, please keep our laws and traditions in mind when filming and packaging your art.

For DJs & Radio Presenters, PLEASE, use your best judgment when picking songs.

Ensure your sets are entertaining but also respectful of the public, our culture and values as a nation and as a people.

By the way, this isn't just a suggestion, it’s part of the IBA Act. The goal is to make sure Zambian broadcasting stays responsible and culturally sensitive.

Let’s keep creating great music that makes Zambia proud!

The Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) wishes to express its profound gratitude and excitement following the official commissioning of the rehabilitation works at the iconic Lusaka Playhouse by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts.

Members of the ZAM Executive were honored to attend this landmark event this morning, joining our sister associations and government officials to witness a pivotal moment for the creative industry.

While the Playhouse is rooted in theater, it has long served as a vital stage for Zambian musicians. From live performances and acoustic sets to the now famous funeral artistic send offs for our brothers and sisters, this venue is a cornerstone of our cultural identity.

The rehabilitation of this facility, which has stood as a beacon of talent since 1958, is not just a win for thespians, but a massive victory for the entire music fraternity. Modernizing this space ensures that our members have a professional, high-quality environment to showcase their craft and connect with fans.

We also wish to acknowledge the Ministry's commitment to the financial health of the sector.

The handover of support cheques to our sister associations, including NATAAZ, NAMA, ZAFODAMUS, VAC, and ZAAP, demonstrates a holistic approach to uplifting the arts.

ZAM stands in solidarity with these organizations. As the Lusaka Playhouse transforms into a vibrant, modern hub, we foresee:

Increased Collaboration: More cross-disciplinary projects between musicians and theater practitioners.

Job Creation: Improved infrastructure leads to more frequent events and technical opportunities.

Legacy Preservation: Ensuring that the next generation of Zambian stars has a world-class platform to launch their careers.

The music industry does not exist in a vacuum. When the Lusaka Playhouse thrives, the Zambian music scene thrives. We thank the Government, through Hon. Minister Elvis Nkandu and PS Kangwa Chileshe, for recognizing that infrastructure is the backbone of the creative economy.

We call upon our members and all stakeholders to support this transition. Let us ensure that once these renovations are complete, we fill the Playhouse with the sounds of Zambia, making it a truly global center for entertainment.
