As we celebrate 20 years of Barefeet Theatre, we’re looking back at a special moment from 2013 when our founder shared the story of how it all began during an interview with cnnafrica accompanied by our Executive Director Grace Banda.

What started as a simple vision has grown into two decades of creativity, impact, and transformation through theatre. This is the story of our roots, our journey, and the belief that art can change lives.

Through our partnership with , we have been working with juveniles at Kamwala Remand, using theatre and creative expression as tools for healing, confidence, and hope.
Our facilitators have been in constant engagement with the children, preparing them for performances.

On 21st May, the young people shared powerful performances before invited stakeholders at Kamwala Juvenile Remand Centre, courageously telling stories that remind us of the importance of dignity, rehabilitation, and second chances.

This work also formed part of the One Day Freedom Celebration under the theme “Breaking Chains, Building Dreams,” a platform amplifying the voices of children in the justice system through art, performance, and storytelling, where Barefeet performers also presented a powerful performance in solidarity with the children and the message behind the initiative.

We are proud to stand alongside organisations and stakeholders advocating for a more child-centred justice system, one that listens, restores, and believes in the potential of every child.

Theatre with a purpose!

Last week, on 8th May 2026, the Barefeet Young African Leaders Academy (YALA) participants took Interactive Theatre for Justice (ITJ) to the communities of Kalikiliki and Mtendere, using performance as a tool for education, dialogue, and change.

Through powerful and engaging performances, participants addressed the growing issue of illegal and unsafe abortions, challenging misconceptions and encouraging communities to seek proper medical care from certified health professionals.

The project also included two Legislative Theatre performances, creating space for community members to not only watch the stories unfold, but also participate in conversations around real-life challenges affecting young people today.

This initiative was inspired by a transformative 10-day regional training in Malawi facilitated by Theatre for a Change, Malawi , where two Barefeet participants joined young leaders from Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Through the programme, participants were trained in Theatre for a Change’s unique methodologies, using Interactive Theatre for Justice (ITJ) and Legislative Theatre (LT) as powerful tools for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) advocacy.

And now, they’ve brought that knowledge back home, turning learning into action and using theatre to spark important conversations within their own communities.

On 29th April, a screening of BANSHEE, a two-part
collaboration between UK and Zambian artists and a powerful all-female dance theatre and documentary project, was held at the British High Commission in Lusaka.
Banshee explores identity, emotional release, and female empowerment through the voices of women from Garden Compound in Lusaka at

Developed through a two week-long workshop that created a safe space for women to share their stories, build confidence, and express themselves through the arts, the project brought together 30 participants who journeyed from strangers to a united community , culminating in a moving performance and film.

The piece reflects the strength, vulnerability, and sisterhood that emerged throughout the process.

A heartfelt thank you to the Festival Connect Fund

Last week, Barefeet Theatre had the honour of joining the Italian School of Lusaka in celebrating the vibrant spirit of Carnivale.

The event was graced by His Excellency Enrico De Agostini, the Italian Ambassador to Zambia, who officiated as Guest of Honour.

Through a dynamic blend of acrobatics, dance, batucada, juggling, and captivating fire performances, Barefeet Theatre brought the celebration to life with energy, colour, and creativity. Beyond the stage, interactive workshops engaged students and participants, fostering artistic expression, confidence, and cultural appreciation.

The performances not only entertained but also inspired and demonstrating the power of the arts to unite communities, celebrate diversity, and create unforgettable shared experiences.
