Join us in “The Newsroom” next Saturday at Everyday Lusaka Gallery for Kalinosi Mutale’s solo exhibition curated by Sana Ginwalla.

In a world overwhelmed by news, Kalinosi Mutale’s abstract works on paper, collage, and fabric prompt us to rethink how we perceive and interpret the stories we consume. By blending personal worldviews with his artistic vision, he reminds us that reality is never one-dimensional.

“The Newsroom” delves into pressing issues such as the Congo and Palestine conflicts, Zambia’s drought, and societal challenges. It explores the role of the civilian and the newsgatherer, asking: What is news? By whom? For whom? The exhibition encourages us to confront our own biases and acknowledge that our understanding is always partial. More than just an art show, The Newsroom is critical reflection on how we interpret the world around us, an invitation to participate in the ongoing transaction of meaning.

We are especially honoured to share that the exhibition text will be written by Gankhanani Moyo, Zambia’s UNESCO-recognised international expert and trainer on intangible cultural heritage.

International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) is 17 October.

On this day, we remember the need to respect ICH, the ICH of other communities and express our cultural diversity with pride.

Finally, we have a day that cuts across all communities, groups and individuals worldwide.

Here we go! The sharing workshop to strengthen the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (hashtag ) in West Africa started this morning in Abuja.
This important meeting, organized by the UNESCO Office for West Africa with the support of the Abuja Office and the participation of the Accra Office, is being held for 3 days in the Nigerian capital.
This workshop brings together representatives from 5 countries: Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone alongside international experts such as those of the global network of UNESCO ICH facilitators to exchange experiences in safeguarding, transmission and promotion of ICH, while highlighting the crucial role of local communities, young people and women in this process.
The opening ceremony was attended by the representative of the UNESCO Regional Office for West Africa through the voice of Abdourahane Diallo, Head Office in Abuja, The Gambia as the country of honor, and Nigeria which is hosting the meeting at home.
The training sessions will be delivered by two ICH International Facilitators, Ms Emily Drani Drani and Mr Gankhanani Moyo and the UNESCO team.

Let's support the young poets by reading their poems and liking the one that stands out.

Young Poets’ Competition

We are pleased to announce that the competition received an overwhelming response from young poets in Zambia. The poems submitted covered a range of themes, reflecting the diverse interests of the poets.

During the screening process, we focused on whether the submission instructions had been followed. It was observed that some poets did not adhere to the guidelines and were disqualified immediately. One poet submitted a photographed copy of a handwritten poem but did not include their phone number. As the text was difficult to extract, we requested a text version via email. Unfortunately, we did not receive a response. Additionally, some poets failed to provide short biographies or photographs, which also led to disqualification.

After completing the screening process, 15 poets qualified to enter the competition. Their works have been posted below in the order of receipt of their submissions. You may start voting now.
We encourage all readers to support the young poets by liking the poem that resonates most with them. Public voting will account for 50% of the final score, while the remaining 50% will be determined by Judges who are expert poets that will be introduced soon.

A never before seen photo of Ngoni King, Inkosi Yamakhosi Mphezeni II (Xilowa Gabriel Jele) when he was aged 10 years old in 1901. Unknown to many, this is the same year that the colonial government put him on the throne to succeed his grandfather, Inkosi Yamakhosi Mphezeni 1. The ten year old Ngoni King was given the Mpanza brothers of Mushamunye and Zamajaya to help him run the amaNgoni, including most of his uncles such as ManziAmabi, Zamani, Maguya and Sairi.

It has been said by many that a people that do not know where they come from are not likely to know where they are going. In short, it is difficult to have a clear path to your future in the absence of your history.

For this reason, today, I choose to celebrate the outstanding historian, Gumbi Kaziguda Jele for dedicating his life to writing on the history of the Ngoni people, chiefly those of present day Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.

As a cultural expert, I have argued that without culture, we remain a dead people. But what is culture without history? We cannot have cultural identity without a history.

Baba Jele, we salute you.

I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who sent me congratulatory messages on my graduation. Your kind words have made me feel more appreciated than ever before. You will probably never know what this means to me. I am truly grateful.

I worked on this for very long and many are the times that I felt like throwing in the towel due to frustration and other circumstances but you, friends and family, helped me keep on. I wish to thank my wife, kids, friends (including many of you friends that I have never met in person) and the rest of the family tree for the unwavering support. It is my desire to make whatever contribution I can make to individuals and to society as a collective with my newly acquired status.

Allow me to further mention that as much as I love the PhD qualification, I would be honoured if you addressed me simply as Gankhanani as opposed to Dr Moyo. I treasure Gankhanani because it’s a name that is more meaningful than any title to me. So, by addressing me as Gankhanani, you will be more realistic to what resonates with my spirit and inner desire.

Once again, I thank you all for your support then and now too.

Ever grateful.
