Get ready for a rare celestial double feature this weekend. ๐ซ๐
On Sunday, May 31, the night sky will deliver a rare blue moon โ the second full moon of the same month. The first full moon appeared on May 1, and now the lunar cycle has aligned perfectly to give us another one just 30 days later.
Blue moons only happen once every two or three years, which is exactly why we use the phrase โonce in a blue moon.โ๐ฏ
But this one comes with an extra twist. It will also be a micromoon, meaning it will be the smallest and faintest full moon of the entire year. Just hours before reaching full phase, the moon will be at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth, making it appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual.
The best time to catch it is during moonrise on May 31, when the famous โmoon illusionโ can make the moon appear much larger near the horizon beside trees, buildings, and city skylines.
And despite the name, the moon will not actually turn blue. The term simply refers to the rarity of the event โ but that makes it no less magical.๐๐ป
The next monthly blue moon will not happen again until 2028, so if the skies are clear this weekend, take a moment to look up and enjoy one of the rarest sights the night sky has to offer. โจ
