In the artwork Reconciliation, two mighty elephants are depicted embracing each other after a fierce and bruising fight. Their immense bodies, marked with scars of battle, lean gently toward one another, an image that radiates both strength and tenderness. Elephants are often remembered for their incredible memory; they are creatures who “never forget.” Yet, here we see something profound despite their memory, they also choose forgiveness.

Elephants are social animals bound by deep family ties, loyalty, and unity. They may clash fiercely when provoked, but their bonds run deeper than conflict. This artwork draws on that paradox: the same memory that could fuel grudges becomes a foundation for restoration. By holding on to the past, they could remain enemies, yet by reconciling, they secure their future together.

In many ways, this is a lesson for humanity. We live in a world plagued with bitterness, where grudges outlive relationships and unforgiveness cripples families, communities, and even nations. The elephants in Reconciliation remind us that true strength is not found in the fight, but in the embrace that follows. Forgiveness does not erase memory, it redeems it. It transforms wounds into wisdom, enemies into friends, and pain into peace.

This piece invites us to reflect: If creatures known for never forgetting can reconcile, how much more should we, with our higher sense of reason and compassion, choose forgiveness? For in reconciliation, both elephants and humans alike find the path to healing, unity, and enduring strength.
