"Creeping Dawn" Oil on canvas, A2 size.

2024 was a harsh, dry year in Zambia and by late October there were more leaves under the trees than on them, with very little grass. However, the bare trees let more of the morning light filter through, making for beautiful light effects on the woodland floor.

To get to eye-level with this lively brood of mannikin chicks, I climbed up onto the water tank in my garden in Zambia and sat watching them for hours. Just a couple of weeks after hatching, they clearly had minds and personalities of their own. The adults lay an amazing number of eggs and they are very careful about choosing a nest site – often setting up next to a colony of wasps for protection from predators.

Like many artists of the past, I see great potential in the hills, towns and beaches of Mediterranean France. I'd go in a flash and set up for a week of "plein air" painting, if only I could find a cheap way to travel...

An early morning glide on the clean, clear water; a light mist rising and a brace of otters slicing the glassy surface; Black-backed barbets on a high twig catching the first rays of sun: this was my welcome back to the Lunga River.

“Sneezeback Ridge”, so named because it echoes my sneeze every morning when I settle down to paint, rendered in detail from my garden in Zambia: 100 hours of pure pleasure behind the easal. Painting from my own back yard, I get to watch the seasons unfold over an intimately familiar landscape: all this mass of green undergrowth will die back during the year and, in the driest months, might be swept away by fire.
