“TWO TERMS ARE NOT ENOUGH?” — THE THIRD-TERM DEBATE IS BACK

Calls for President Hakainde Hichilema to remain in office beyond 2031 are beginning to generate a new political debate in Zambia.

Now there are also voices within the UPND camp and outside it openly talking about extending the presidential term limit.

And Zambia has been here before.

In 2001, President Frederick Chiluba faced intense resistance when attempts were made to clear the way for a third term.

So what is driving today's debate?

Is it about development and continuity?

Or should Zambia's two-term constitutional limit remain untouched?

👉 Zambian Eye examines the growing third-term debate, the current constitutional position and what happened when Zambia faced this question under Chiluba.

MANDEVU CONSTITUENCY TIME TO REFLECT, REORGANISE AND SECURE A MUST-WIN

Today, we called on the Mandevu Ward and Constituency Party Structures to have a postmortem of the recently concluded General Elections and discuss the way forward ahead of the upcoming by-elections.

We encouraged the Ward and Constituency Structures to work together, strengthen our grassroots structures, and identify what went wrong so that we can improve.

I emphasised that Mandevu is a must-win. We need no excuses. We must understand why we did not get the expected votes in Mandevu, considering the votes President Hakainde Hichilema received in the just-ended General Elections.

It is now time to learn from the past, work together, and get back to the ground to deliver Mandevu for the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema.

Hichilema needs four terms as President — Mtonga

UPND member George Mtonga has joined several other party-aligned members proposing a prolonged stay in office for President Hakainde Hichilema beyond the constitutional limit of two terms.

“President Hakainde Hichilema’s plans need a whole 20 years for them to create the value that I expect. The idea that this can be done in 10 years is almost impossible. It takes four years to go through documents before money even moves,” Mtonga postulates.

He continues: “The HH ideology must govern this country for 20 years for it to produce the value that I have always calculated.”

FLORENCE SOLOCHI says she regrets meeting BEN LOMBE, despite him giving her the spotlight, because he aired her dirty linen in public for clout when he should have protected her as they were friends. 😱

■ "I do regret meeting him. We had our good times and our bad times, but I feel the toxicity that came with that friendship was too much," she told Chimweka, adding that it could reduce her chances of getting married.

Florence further revealed that they reconciled but later had a disagreement because of getting wigs on credit, and that she has learned a skill from him and will avoid being talkative like her former friend in her new business.
