MQHZ CALLS FOR STRONGER EBOLA PREPAREDNESS AMID OUTBREAK IN DRC.

Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) is deeply concerned about the continued Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which continues to claim lives and poses a potential public health risk to neighbouring countries, including Zambia, given the constant movement of people and goods across the shared border, which may increase the risk of cross-border importation if not adequately mitigated.

MQHZ warns that Zambia cannot afford complacency considering the country’s geographic proximity to the DRC. Any lapse in preventive readiness could increase vulnerability to the importation of infectious diseases.

The organisation notes that during periods of increased national activity involving large public gatherings, including political activities, there is a need for consistent public health awareness and adherence to preventive practices. Such conditions, including crowding and limited access to hygiene facilities, may increase exposure risks if preventive measures are not observed. This is especially important in the context of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

MQHZ is therefore calling on relevant authorities to take urgent steps to improve screening and preparedness measures at border facilities and ensure that frontline health workers are adequately equipped and protected. These measures should be prioritised given the ongoing outbreak in the neighbouring country. Any delay in strengthening preventive systems could expose the country to avoidable health risks.

The organisation also urges organisers of public and community gatherings, including religious gatherings, market spaces, transport hubs, and other social events, to promote hygiene awareness and responsible health practices to help reduce preventable health risks.

Anger over xenophobic violence in South Africa is spreading across Africa, fueling online calls for a unified response against the targeting of foreign nationals.
Social media campaigns are pushing for a one-day border and trade shutdown with South Africa on June 30, and some are demanding that South Africans leave other African countries.
The outrage follows recent clashes in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Alexandra, where shops owned by foreigners and undocumented migrants were reportedly attacked. Police have made arrests for inciting violence, while President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the attacks and said xenophobia and mob justice have no place in the country.
The situation has prompted diplomatic fallout, with Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe warning their citizens in South Africa. Nigeria has arranged voluntary return flights, and Ghana wants the African Union to discuss the issue at its June meeting.
Despite the online mobilization, neither the AU nor SADC has confirmed any plan for a coordinated border closure on June 30.
