LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL ISSUES STRONG WARNING ON ILLEGAL DUMPING IN DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

The Lusaka City Council is issuing a strong warning to all residents, traders, and businesses engaged in the illegal dumping of waste in Lusaka’s primary drainage systems, especially the Bombay Drain.

This practice must cease with immediate effect.

In recent months, the LCC through its Engineering and Infrastructure Development Department, carried out extensive rehabilitation works on a collapsed stretch of the Bombay Drain. The works were aimed at reinforcing the structure and restoring safe water flow to protect surrounding homes and businesses.

Despite these efforts, illegal dumping continues unabated. Waste, plastics, and solid refuse are being thrown into the drains daily. This blocks water channels, reduces drainage capacity, and threatens the integrity of the recently rehabilitated infrastructure.

Blocked drains are a direct cause of flash floods during the rainy season. This endangers lives, destroys property, damages roads, and disrupts economic activity. The cost of repairing avoidable damage places an unnecessary burden on both the Council and the community.

The Council wishes to remind the public that dumping waste in drainage systems is an offense under the Local Government Act and the Public Health Act. It is not only irresponsible, but also punishable by law. Lusaka City Council will no longer treat this matter lightly.

In response, LCC enforcement officers, in partnership with the Zambia Police Service, will intensify patrols and surveillance along all primary drains. Offenders will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted. Heavy fines will be imposed, in addition to costs for cleanup and any damage caused.

The Council urges all residents to dispose of waste responsibly by using designated collection points, skip bins, and licensed waste collectors. Keeping waste out of drains, streams, and open spaces is a shared responsibility that ensures safety for all.

Lusaka City Council calls on residents to report incidents of illegal dumping to protect public infrastructure.

DEC Dismantles Major Drug Trafficking Networks in Nationwide Operations

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has recorded major successes in its fight against drug trafficking following a series of intelligence-led operations that resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of large quantities of illicit drugs in Western, Southern and Muchinga Provinces.

In Western Province, DEC officers working with the Zambia Police Service arrested 46-year-old Alex Chitoma in Limulunga Compound for trafficking in 214.72 kilogrames of cannabis. The seizure included eight bags and 30 pre-packed bundles of loose cannabis. DEC says the suspect, a second-time offender, has long been on its watchlist and is believed to be a major supplier of cannabis in Mongu District and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, in Livingstone, officers intercepted Zimbabwean national Precious Mpofu, aged 39, at the border and found her in possession of 1.146 kilogrames of high-grade cannabis, 144 bottles of Benylin with Codeine and 12 bottles of Hash Jelly Oil. In a separate operation in Nakonde District, 42-year-old Elizabeth Nankamba was arrested after officers discovered 14.9 kilogrammes of Khat Miraa concealed in a bag while she was travelling to Kitwe.

DEC says all suspects are in lawful custody awaiting court appearances and has reiterated its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations across the country. The Commission has further warned those involved in the illicit drug trade that it will continue working with communities and other stakeholders to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.

Mealie meal prices fall further!

Millers Association of Zambia president Andrew Chintala says most milling companies have reduced prices of mealie meal by between K40 and K50 due to the strong Kwacha and the expected maize bumper harvest.

And Shoprite is today expected to reduce mealie meal prices for various brands ranging from K10 to K17.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Chintala said mealie meal prices have been dropping for about three weeks now.

He hopes that millers that have not yet reduced mealie meal prices will also do so soon.

Mr Chintala commended milling companies that have already passed on the benefits of the appreciated Kwacha and abundant maize to consumers by reducing their prices.

“The move is quite commendable. This has been necessitated by the estimated crop forecast survey figures that were given [recently],” he said.

“That just goes to show that the market is reacting to the economic fundamentals. Owing to that, as well as the appreciation of the Kwacha, this is what you have seen [reduced prices].”

Mr Chintala said every citizen should be talking about the news of mealie meal price reductions the same way they discuss upward adjustments.

Shoprite Manda Hill buyer Edward Ntantaala said more milling companies have given indications to reduce prices of their mealie meal.

He said a 25 kilogramme (kg) bag of National Milling breakfast mealie meal will today be reduced to K279 from K289.

Mr Ntantaala said a 25kg bag of Traditional African Milling, a brand specifically packaged for Shoprite, a mixture of breakfast and roller mealie meal, will now cost K212 from K229.

He said Star Milling slashed prices a week ago to K244 from K259 for a 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal.

Mr Ntantaala said Pembe Milling has also communicated plans to lower the price of its mealie meal.

“ZAF [Air Force Mufungo mealie meal] still remains at K229 for breakfast. They haven’t given us price reductions yet,” he said.

Shoprite has seen an increase in mealie meal sales over the past few days.

A check at Shoprite Manda Hill found a 25kg bag of African Milling roller meal selling at K249.

Another check at Manda Hill Game Stores found a 25kg bag of Champions super roller selling at K205, while a bag of breakfast was pegged at K219.

At Melisa Northmead, a 25kg bag of Simba breakfast mealie meal was selling at K258, while the same bag of Mothers Pride was going for K275.

A 25kg ZAMS super roller at the same shop was pegged at K214.
