HIGH COURT TRANSFERS FORMER PRESIDENT’S REMAINS TO THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT

The Government of the Republic of Zambia wishes to confirm that the High Court in Pretoria has today, Wednesday 22nd April 2026, formally transferred the mortal remains of the Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, to the Zambian Government.

This development follows the former President’s family’s inability to proceed with their case before the South African Supreme Court of Appeal. The mortal remains of the former President have since been relocated from Two Mountains Burial Services (PTY) Limited to a facility managed by the South African Government.

In its 8th August 2025 ruling, the Pretoria High Court directed that the body be released to the Zambian Government to facilitate preparations for repatriation and burial in Zambia.

In line with the court’s directive, the Government will engage with the former President’s family to finalize burial arrangements. The nation will be informed of the agreed-upon details in due course.

ECZ to review nomination fees

The electoral Commission of Zambia says it will review nomination fees for members of Parliament, mayor’s, council Chairpersons and councillors.

In a statement by ECZ chief electoral officer Brown Kasaro, says the Board will communicate on the outcome by 30th of April.

Mr Kasaro says for pre-process of 100 supporter, political parties and independent candidates have been urged to formally write to the Commission , expressing interest in having their supporters processed in the provinces and must pay Presidential nomination fees by 29th of April .

He says the commission will engange the Registrar of Societies regarding concerns raised on the registration of political parties in Zambia.

Mr Kasaro says ECZ will engange office of the attorney general on the requirements that a person contesting for Presidential elections must possess, adding that the verification process of grade 12 certificates for candidates participating in the 2026 elections , will continue to be conducted by the examination council of Zambia through physical and online .

TBZ GIVES BUYERS 24 HOURS TO SUBMIT PRICE MATRICES

The To***co Board of Zambia has issued a 24 hours ultimatum to all licensed buyers to submit their price matrices.

This follows failure by 12 of the 16 licensed buyers to submit their matrices despite an agreement reached last week.

TbZ executive Director Robert Mwale says only 4 out 12 complied , stating that submissions and approval of price matrices by the board is mandatory before the commencement of to***co purchases.

Mr Mwale has described the current situation as unacceptable saying it mounts unnecessary pressure on all stakeholders in the to***co value chain.

He says it is unfortunate that the TAZ sales floor commenced operations without an approved price matrix, adding that the move jeopardizes their mandate to protect growers and ensure orderly marketing of the crop.

Mr. Mwale says the Board is working tirelessly to review all submissions and will only approve price matrices that reflect the cost of production, to ensure that growers get value for their labour while buyers safeguard their sponsored funds.

The Board has since urged all buyers who have started purchasing to***co without approved price matrices to cease operations immediately until approval is granted.

This is according to statement issued by TBZ corporate affairs and communications Manager Lee Haamunji.
