Streetopia

Streetopia Free community events organised by AfrikaBurn in collaboration with civic bodies in the areas where the events are held. Keen to help out? Fantastic!

The first Streetopia event took place on November 28th, 2015, in Obs, Cape Town, South Africa - and the event has grown from strength to strength every year since! The 2021 event will take place on Nov 27th, from 10am - 6pm. As a non-profit community-based event, it takes a whole village to make Streetopia happen - and a small army of volunteers too. The event area includes the Obs Village Green and a length of Lower Main Rd (and also some or all of the Community Centre), and includes a wide range of activities including:

- Large-scale AfrikaBurn art on exhibition
- Small-scale live music stages
- Busking stages
- Mutant Vehicles from AfrikaBurn (art cars) displayed
- Kid's area (cnr Station and Arnold)
- Cinema screenings at various venues
- Art studios participate in Open Studio exhibitions
- Restaurants and bars partner with artists and performers
- Market stalls featuring vintage clothing, craft and food / beverages

- Costume and dressing up is encouraged
- It's a Leave No Trace event
- AfrikaBurn Rangers in attendance on the day
- Gifting is encouraged from both residents and business owners

Two days to go!
As you join the festivities, please remember that we’re celebrating in a shared public space - Observatory - and that means no drinking in the street. Keep the booze cruise pumping at the local bars and venues, then come back out to enjoy the art, performances, and dancefloors alcohol-free.

This keeps Streetopia legit, safe, legal, and welcoming for families and neighbours - and it saves everyone an awkward chat with our stressed teammates (or leo) on the day. Thank you for being mindful, respectful, and lekker as always.

Dezemba is next week anyways. Hold tight.

Four days to go until we shut down Lower Man & turn it into the art and community event of the year.
Remember: Please e-hail, liftshare & if you must park, please use the Obs Junior School Parking space, as they raise funds for their school. Alternatively, you can park at Liesbeek River. Please don't park on the streets in the neighborhood, as this impacts the residents massively. If you stop in a no stopping zone, you will be towed.

His latest collection features African-inspired mythological figures carved from old palette boards - a continuation of his early Afrocentrica work, shaped by childhood memories of “old” Africa, superstition, nature, and tribal art.

The time is getting near, and soon we will be closing Lower Main Road to add festivities to Obs! We understand that those who have logistics for their businesses and personal endeavors will be impacted on the day due to the road closures.
This is a reminder that the roads will be closed from 2am on the 29th for us to rig art. We really appreciate your cooperation and patience during this time. All residents impacted by the closure will be given a Residents Access Pass to get out and get home - Although naturally we'd prefer you join us!
