Phillemon Hlungwani() – b.1975. Thomo, Giyani. – is recognised for his macroscale charcoal and pastel drawings of scenes depicting the rural life, formal and informal settlements. Hlungwani inspiration is deeply rooted in a sense of community and the traditional values that endure in these settlements and his birthplace in Limpopo.🏘️

Children playing hekeleheke-hekee! – or as the English call it, ‘Ring a Ring o' Roses’ -, women collecting water and youngsters on their way to a soccer game. These glimpses frozen in time vibrate with colour, pattern and humanity. Hlungwani meticulously constructed scenes coupled with his mark-making draw your gaze across the paper.👀

Hlungwani’s recent titles of his work include proverbs in xiTsonga, his first language.🗣️

‘Exit Wounds’ by Misheck Masamvu exhibits chaotic compositions, gestural brushwork and figures in a perpetual state of transformation. Masamvu accomplishes through the combination of striking colour with his expressionist style. 🎨

Masamvu’s work investigates new perspectives on the confrontations caused by colonial structures. The viewer is confronted fragmented bodies, scenes and passages oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Poetic spaces and layered realities invite reflection on the formation of political subjects as agents of social transformation. 🦋

Dominique Cheminais’() ‘A Cage in Search of a Bird’ questions Franz Kafka’s diary entry: ‘I am a cage in search of a bird’. Kafka is well known for his fascination with love, however, Cheminais’ questions whether Kafka is the cage and whether love is represented by the bird or something more difficult to define.🐦‍⬛

Cheminais’ new body of work is inspired the characters of her novel, ‘Many Shallows’, a novel inspired by Kafka and his three loves. ‘Many Shallows’ is split into three parts, with each one paying homage to each of these pursuits. Kafka, represented as a spectre or spirit, communicates with them through their dreams, luring them to him. He then bestows each a kind of metamorphosis, granting them freedom from their cages.🪽

Moses Zibor() – b. 1978, Surulere. Lagos, Nigeria – ventured far from his homeland to be reborn as an artist in Almaty, Kazakhstan where he currently resides. Inspired by the colours and textiles of his adopted home, Zibor discovered a way to transcend his previous work while nurturing the connection between his Nigerian heritage. 🎨

Encouraged by his art professor to “break the rules”, Zibor started recording his dreams in a journal. ‘African Surrealism’, Zibor’s recent exhibition, celebrates this newfound freedom and transforms his inner thoughts and personal beliefs into his own form of surrealism. ⛓️‍💥

“In this new body of luscious and layered paintings, I welcome you to a part-speculative, part-historical frontier in which complex notions of collaboration and conflict between settler and native, colonizer and colonized are reflected in the sartorial choices of my avatars. The decay and ruin of the memorials and military forts in my native Eastern Cape has drawn my attention to a lapse in our collective memory. 💽

It has awakened my need to revisit the geography of the South African colonial frontier and explore the military fort as a microcosm of frontier encounters. The Eastern Cape, which was a fiercely contested battleground, indicates a significant collective loss and has prompted me to offer up a counter-narrative to eulogize that which has been overlooked and omitted,” - Athi-Patra Ruga's() ‘Amadoda on the verge’ 😶

Conrad Botes() – b. 1969, Ladysmith. South Africa – considers himself a comic artist first and foremost, but often deviates into paintings, sculptures and industrial design. The jagged graphic lines and subversive stories of Afrikaner culture fuel his practice. 🎭

"With the comics, we're dealing very specifically with a South African audience who know what we're referring to. Originally we write them in Afrikaans, so many of the references are to things in Afrikaans culture. The paintings I make are much more personal. I can explain them if I have to - but I'd much rather not. People can formulate their own ideas about the work. I do them in a certain way that I enjoy so much and I hope other people will enjoy them too." 🤔

Angus Taylor’s() ‘The Weight of Wings’ exhibits twelve new sculptures that are the outcome of one year’s labour in his Pretoria studio and foundry. Combining various earth materials, this new body of work reflects Taylor’s commitment to artisanal work and respect for the histories and resistant qualities of his materials. 🪨

This exhibition is comprised of prototypical female figures encompassed by Belfast Gabbro, a stone formed 2 billion years ago. These powerful female figures, at once mythical and totemic, stoic yet unthreateningly heroic embody conditions of pause, composure, protection, conveyance and transformation. 🦋
