Love isn’t always on time… nor limited to a calendar… nor even days of the week...

'Eight days a week,
I love you,
It's not enough to show I care...'

Following the rain-delayed Valentine’s Concert, we re-invite lovers, friends and families
to celebrate LOVE
with music in nature on Sunday 19 March
at the glorious NIROX Sculpture Park
in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind
the birthplace and the source
of human promise,
captured with passion,
excellence and harmony
by exceptional acoustic and a capella artists
celebrating the power of LOVE

By fate and by design, the programme remains unchanged, apart from the introduction of opening artist Senna-Marie with her sweetly-toned acoustic songs.

Programme:
10h00 - Gates open
11h00 - Senna-Marie
12h00 - Shotgun Tori
13h00 - MaxX & Love
14h00 - Laurie Levine, AusTebza & Richard Bruyns
15h00 - Albert Frost, Tubatsi Moloi & Wynand Davel
16h00 - The Soil
17h00 - Sfiso Atomza & SekenHand

Fundación Casa Wabi and NIROX are happy to announce a new collaboration between their institutions in Mexico and South Africa, to take place in 2023/2024. The initiative is created to strengthen exchange between artists and creatives from these regions. The participants will be selected by invitation from each institution, within the parameters of their programs. The residencies available are: a six-week residency at Casa Wabi (Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca) for one South African artist, and a six-week residency at NIROX (Cradle of Humankind, South Africa) for one former Mexican resident from Casa Wabi.

*Please note this is not an open call.

began his residence on the 1st of February and it has been to see the work develop and to learn from him along the way. Reflecting on the experience, he writes:

‘The timing of the residency was really good. For the first time I am being allowed an extended time to make work, to think, read, walk, reflect, and just try stuff in space. There’s an immediacy here, with the high ceilings, natural light and concrete floors, I can try something and see how it works right now. In general, the consideration of space and what it can allow is important to the practice.

In a way, this primary consideration of and response to space or context determines what the work will be.

Spending time here has been incredibly generous, almost every aspect of my practice has stretched out a little: the works on canvas, salt bags, the found object stuff at the Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture, and now it’s going towards the aspects of video-photographic performance; the characters are also out to play.

These are existing material concerns for the most part but they necessarily have to find different iterations in different spaces. It’s been good to exercise this intuitive approach.

Every new idea has had the room to grow here, there’s almost nothing I haven’t tried.’

‘Layers: Rock Art Across Space and Time’ was conceived as a travelling exhibition that brings together the work of artists and scholars from Europe, Latin America, and Africa. Held in collaboration with the Embassies of Spain, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, France, Italy, Mexico, and Portugal, it foregrounds the impact of a particularly pivotal moment in human history and its ramifications in the present.

Tomorrow, NIROX will host a conference at Workshop17’s Seminar Room (V&A Waterfront, Cape Town) which brings together a selection of artists and scholars involved in the exhibition.

For those unable to attend, the live-stream can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6seLDr0zNw

The exhibition is supported by The European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC). The first iteration at NIROX, located in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, ran until 15 February 2023. It will travel to Cape Town in March/April this year.

Some pictures from the recent 5-day workshop , with 3rd and 4th year students from the University of Pretoria and the University of Johannesburg. Led by Walter Oltmann, students made use of wire and other materials at hand - toothpicks, clothespegs, bottle tops, polyurethane foam, as well as found objects and materials brought from home - to produce their own sculptural works.

Big thank you to all involved, and to .johan and for helping to organise.

Dear NIROX patrons,

While the rain is a blessing for the park, it is not conducive to hosting tomorrow's Valentine's concert. We have given the event every chance of proceeding, but have come to the sad conclusion, with the rain continuing and the predictions poor, that we must postpone.

And so the concert is unfortunately postponed until Sunday 19 March.  All pre-purchased tickets remain valid. If you cannot attend on the new date a refund is offered by not later than Monday 6 March through [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming artists and guests to the park in the new month.

Note: Tomorrow, 12 Feb 2023, the park will be open to day visitors as if it were a regular Sunday.

During his residency, Inga Somdyala aims to create a site-specific land art installation, making use of the Education Hub to dedicate some time to writing more consistently. As with his more recent residencies elsewhere, he intends to collect soil from NIROX and the surrounding area, to be used in his work, and to bury a few pieces of canvas, thus making Gauteng the third province in which Somdyala has buried canvas since 2021.

Artist in residence, Nathalie Karagiannis, has spent the last month transforming the residency studio with an evolving installation, exploring the poetics of hospitality and omission.

Below is an extract on the installation, by renowned art historian and curator, Hans Theys:

‘One square meter of lawn is removed from a park and placed on the floor of an exhibition space. The work might remind us of the square meter called Private Property demarcated with ropes by the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers at dokumenta V in 1972. Here, the rectangular wound in the park is marked by four short sticks at the corners, which are linked by orange elastic bands that look like the ones used by cyclists in my country fourty years ago. In my mind, two time shifts take place. In your mind other things happen, invisible to me, unless we share our experiences. ’

Below is an extract on the installation, by renowned art historian and curator, Hans Theys:

‘A meeting between eight eggs and four used wooden chairs leaning against each other, legs up, only one leg resting on an egg… In 1964 the young German artist Bernd Lohaus, sent abroad by his teacher Joseph Beuys, does a performance in Madrid, having the four legs of a wooden chair rest on four eggs: El Nacimiento del Huevo. Karagiannis’ sculptural installation is exquisite. An inert dance, a frozen movement, a delicate encounter of singular objects; speaking of tender feelings, hesitations, prudence and tact.’
