🌱 BENEATH THE SOIL IS COMING TO MACUFE 2026! 🎭

The award-winning physical theatre production Beneath The Soil is bringing its powerful story to MACUFE 2026.

Brief Synopsis:
In a haunting graveyard, Mothusi, the Gatekeeper, encounters the spirits of three women whose lives were lost to Gender-Based Violence. As their stories of abuse, control, betrayal and silence unfold, Mothusi is forced to confront his own buried truth as a perpetrator. Through movement, poetry, ritual and storytelling, Beneath The Soil explores GBV, toxic masculinity, accountability, grief and healing.

Introducing Ernest “Ginger” Baleni — a dynamic performing artist and creative being whose practice spans acting, choreography, dance and directing.

A storyteller at heart, Ernest uses movement and performance to unfold the untold stories, bringing powerful narratives to life through the body and the stage.

🏆 In 2026, he was nominated for Best Choreography/Movement Direction in a Play at the Naledi Theatre Awards — a recognition of his contribution to contemporary theatre practice.

A proud Free State artist, Ernest continues to take his work beyond provincial borders, making his mark nationally and internationally.

Now, he joins the Lejweleputswa Creative Exchange – BRIDGES Cycle 2026, contributing his experience, knowledge and creative practice to the development of other artists.
