We on it
The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is proud to present Khoes at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, taking place from 25 June to 5 July 2026.
Representing the rich cultural heritage and storytelling traditions of the Northern Cape, Khoes is a powerful and emotionally charged stage production that follows the journey of a young Nama-khoi girl whose life is shaped by oppression, sacrifice, and an unyielding desire for freedom.
Denied the opportunity to attend school, Khoes is forced to remain on the farm, helping her mother endure the daily struggles of survival. While she dreams of a different future in the city a life filled with opportunity, dignity, and hope her reality remains deeply rooted in poverty and systemic marginalisation.
Through compelling storytelling, authentic cultural expression, and moving performances, Khoes shines a light on the resilience of young women who dare to dream beyond the limitations imposed by their circumstances. The production explores themes of identity, inequality, perseverance, and the enduring human spirit.
As one of the Northern Cape productions selected to perform on Africa’s largest arts platform, Khoes demonstrates the province’s commitment to nurturing local talent and sharing stories that resonate across generations and communities.
The Department wishes the cast, crew, and creative team every success as they take this remarkable production to the National Arts Festival under the theme "Create New Worlds, Come Together."
