Hi all, after last week's wonderful concert, we are moving on to next week's concert and workshop!!
On Friday night, 10 April, at 19h30, we will have a FREE brassband concert at the Schuur, next to the Drostdy. Everybody is welcome, but you have to make a booking through Quicket so that they can keep tally of the numbers. Space for 80 people.
On the Saturday, there will be a workshop in Barrydale to follow on the concert. If you know of anybody who would be keen to progress on his/her brass instrument, they must please contact one of the 2 contacts underneath for arrangements. The workshop is free. There will be transport from Swellendam. The focus is on children, but if space allows, and an adult is keen, it will be fine to join.

Last night we had another fantastic classical music concert in Swellendam! Gustavo Romero, the renowned Mexican-American pianist played to a full house at Olyfkrans College. His strong performance of some well known and some less known works brought a beautiful balance to a most enjoyable and much appreciated evening!
Next year, Mr Romero will commemorate the 200th year of Beethoven's death with a full Beethoven program! Swellendam cant wait!!!!

Having the Hugo Lambrecht Music School in Swellendam was pure joy! Congrattulations to every musician who performed, and congratulations to Liam Burden, their energetic conductor, and to each person involved with the school, I salute you!

Next Thursday evening at 18h00, we are hosting Gustavo Romero, the Mexican-American virtuoso. He was here last year and the concert was sold out. We still have tickets left for Thursday, so please buy your tickets ASAP. .

Come and enjoy an hour of music on Sunday afternoon at 16h00 at the Dutch Reformed Church. 33 students of the Hugo Lambrecht Music School is performing a variety of classical and light music ( program underneath). Tickets are R100 at the door. Primary school learners R50.

On 22 March at 16h00, the students of the Hugo Lamprecht School of music will perform in the Dutch Reformed Church in Swellendam! They are a 32 member chamber orchestra. This will be great! They are on a tour of the Overberg. Please buy your ticket at the Church office, or do an EFT into the Swellendam Music Society bank account. Tickets cost R100. Absa acc 4101361505.

I have spent my Sunday morning listening to YouTube offerings of a piece played by Ida Pelliccioli last night at Olyfkrans College, Swellendam. But none of the various versions came even close to last night. Is it the acoustics of that beautiful venue, here in our town, or is it a really good piano?? Was it my nerves, pulling all the strings together? Or is it just that Ida's masterful rendition of Bach's Chaconne in D minor for the left hand as transcribed by Brahms, was simply superior to any other pianist that I can find on the internet?? which I think it is! The opportunity to have heard this, in Swellendam, at a fraction of the cost that a ticket would cost anywhere else, is a sheer blessing. A moment to sustain me for years to come. Thank you Ida for that! And thank you Adriaan and Louise Mocke for the use of that magnificent space; your hard work!

Johan Sebastian Bach is certainly one of the world's top composers of classical and religious music. His legacy is vast, and he composed for various instruments. Many serious composers have transcribed his music for piano. If you have ever played (or tried to play!) one of his pieces on piano, as I have in my youth, or if you do not have an idea of what his music sounds like, or if you are an expert of JSBach's music, you are most welcome to come to the Swellendam Music Society's first concert of 2026 to hear Ida Pelliccioli play some of his transcribed pieces. Concert starts at 18h00 at Olyfkrans College on 28 February. Tickets can be bought at the door: R250 non members and R150 members.
