Sango Charlie, better known by his stage name Msangwana, is an underground conscious kasi rapper from Ntabozuko, Eastern Cape. Born Sango Charlie, he hails from Dongwe Location, where his love for music was first nurtured. As a vernacular rapper, Msangwana primarily raps in IsiXhosa, using his music as a powerful tool for storytelling and social commentary.
Msangwana's journey in music began in the early 2000s, when he started writing and recording with his neighbor Luphelo Lindeni. Together, they formed the group Men G Ta in 2008, alongside Sihle Skelem, Thandolwethu Ntshintshi, and Sinesipho Bici. The group released the hit song "EDongwe," which inspired a wave of local artists to follow in their footsteps.
After Men G Ta disbanded in 2010, Msangwana embarked on a solo career, blazing a trail through the streets of Berlin. In 2013, he joined the Poetry And Sound Sessions hosted by Ayerz Mabinda in Ndevana, where he honed his stage presence and gained a loyal following.
In 2014, Msangwana released his mixtape "Ndim Lo," featuring collaborations with Luphelo Lindeni, Embonation, Marela, and Noga. Three tracks from the mixtape received airplay on local radio stations.
In 2017, Msangwana formed the group Abahambi, but creative differences led to the group's demise. However, this led to an opportunity to work with Lush Bytheway...
Throughout his career, Msangwana has remained true to his roots, using his music to speak to the experiences and struggles of his community. As a conscious kasi rapper, he continues to push boundaries and inspire positive change.
