For those of us who always notice the trees 🌿

This week, I’ve brought together Kate Scharf’s new paintings, Jo Roets’s sculpted clay leaves and Laurel Holmes’s newly available Sentient etchings. Three very different ways to bring a little of the natural world into your home.

See the works and read why I chose them in this week’s newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/1b696c840e2d/somethings-growing-in-this-weeks-selection

A lovely new chapter for 'Anachronism XVIII' by Corné Eksteen, which has recently found its new home.

Part of Eksteen’s ongoing Anachronism series, this work brings a contemporary sensibility to the traditional still life, playing with colour, perception and the familiar in unexpected ways.

We’re delighted to see this painting begin its next chapter with a new collector.

An artist you love may have a work closer to your budget than you expected.

I’ve picked three by Laurel Holmes, Karen Wykerd and Kitty Dörje, from R1,575 to R5,750. An original painting, a unique framed monotype and a Cape Town screen print, with a short note on why I’d choose each.

See my picks in this week’s newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/fb7288c07344/three-smaller-works-id-happily-take-home

Send it to someone whose taste in art you share.

Our featured artist for October, Kate Schärf reflects on her creative practice as well as her featured work 'Opus':

"Painting to me is freedom of expression - I fell in love with painting during lockdown, when I really started to get into oil paints. I used to use paint with acrylic at school but this period of quiet and isolation was a time where I fell in love with working with oil colour.

'Opus' is a work where I didn't use my favoured veridian glaze. The title of the work is inspired by the music of Tchaikovsky, which I was listening to lovingly on repeat while I was painting this work."

Long afternoons by the water, the familiar scent of salt or chlorine and the calm after the ritual of a swim. Nicole Pletts’ featured works capture something of the simple pleasure to be found at the beach or beside the pool.

Pletts’ works invite us to revisit these moments and the memories that make them special.
