The story of the Karoo Corner Poles.
Before the days of tanalite poles and iron droppers, and the fact that the Karoo is mostly treeless, the farmers in the Karoo made use of stone to establish their beads' corner posts. The stones were gathered over a wide area and then planted in the raw soil. If you look closely in the Karoo you can still sometimes see some of the stones standing lonely and desolate. With closer viewing, you can observe the thread marks on the stones. This was caused by the wind and extreme heat and cold we know in the Karoo, which over many decades etched the wire's permanent anchor position into the stone. Thus, each stone has its own unique signature. When I drill the holes in the stone I am guided by the stones form, texture and contours, but keep in mind at all times that there must be standard wine, side by side, in the holes, to make every stone a functional work of art. So not only art, but a functional working peace.
The stones I have in stock all come from Voorbaat, Ladismith.
