Arts and Culture is a mirror of Society

This weekend South Africa is celebrating Heritage day. So this is originally a day celebrated by the Zulu nation commemorating the death of King Shaka Zulu.

The post-aparthied ANC government renamed this day Heritage day as a clerian call to unite South African to celebrate their cultural diversity.

Then the establishment realized that this concept would further unite South Africans and restore pride in their identity. Hence they tried to introduce "Braai Day" which serves their commercial interest which is an attempt to erode history and miseducate South Africans to lose their identity.

With this said, I was intrigued by how we now celebrate our Heritage on Heritage Day.

Our cultures have taken a back seat in advancing the commercial interest of the elites and capital. Our Arts and Cultural events celebrating African should be at the forefront this weekend.

But instead we have musical festivals with international acts headlining our events, these acts don't even represent our cultures or heritage.

These acts are represent cultures and heritage of their own native countries.

Arrested Development (USA)
Robert Glasper(USA)
Tems (Nigeria)
Incognito(England)
Shalamar (USA) Maxwell(USA/Haiti) Anthony Hamilton (USA)
Freddie Jackson (USA)
Burna Boy (Nigeria/England)

Let's not forget that the capital of South Africa had even planned to host Nicki Minaj (USA)

They put a huge marketing machine behind these events on all media formats which 90% are fully owned by capital. Even SABC radio stations are spending money on some of these events. Further advancing the agenda of eroding self actualization of Africans through identifying with their culture and heritage.

I think the Government needs to be decisive with their arts and culture programs. Fund promoters and event organizers who support the concept of heritage day and celebrate our Heritage through our Arts and Culture.

These Americans can visit us next month. But this month we must put ourselves first. When it's Black History Month in the US they never invite our acts to headline their events because they want to showcase their heritage which looks at slavery as a point of reference not Africa

The best local 12play

I put this playlist together to show that as a music compiler it is possible to archive 100% Local music rotation. I play RnB and Soul and on Sunday our airwaves migrate to America. Can you imagine a Sunday where you hear such beautiful music and it’s proudly South African...

There was a huge outcry when former COO of SABC Mr. Hlaudi Motsoeneng instructed all radio station under the national broadcaster to play 90% South Africa music. At the time there was a huge outcry from the public including radio presenter/djs, music compilers and music pluggers.

I consider myself privileged to have traveled many countries before joining Power987(Power FM) in 2013. Every country I’ve been, most radio stations had their local music on high rotation. The arts and culture is a window to which you see the character of a society and music often reveals the social commentary of a society.

The most beautiful thing to watch was how proud and patriotic people were when it comes to their local music. They dance and sang-along to their sound. This is not to say that they didn’t know other music, they did. They just gave platforms to their local artists.

Now the big question is how do the other countries do compare to South Africa... well it’s simple: Radio Station play local music on high rotation and the rest fills the gaps. For over 40 years in South Africa radio stations have exposed our society with American pop culture.

Now SABC’s royalty bill might not be disclosed to the public but it’s no guessing who benefits more from those royalty Cheques. Jacob Zuma introduces the concept of radical economic transformation late, which is what Mr. Hlaudi Motsoeneng subscribed to. The EFF is highly focused on Land Reform being the genesis of economic transformation.

While the politicians argue our artists have been short changed, they can’t even bury themselves because of the peanuts they earn. They are not celebrated by their own national radio stations, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergass, Barry White, Phyllis Hyman, Whitney Houston...the list is endless when they died they could bury themselves and their continue to earn huge pay cheques from South Africa. Country music in America is huge and trust me majority of radio stations in the US are pushing country music then pop. Hip Hop and RnB are pushed by traditionally black owned radio stations like WBLS in Brooklyn often called the Kaya FM of Brooklyn (although now it’s been bought over by a white owned company). The bottom line is the radio stations over there give you a glimpse of their culture.

Covid-19 has struck our country, every economy will be hugely affected. Now our artists will be hit heavy by this. But there is a remedy, South Africa like many countries have closed the borders, which means its time now to put South Africans first than open us up to be devoured by the big economies again especially when it comes to arts and culture. SABC is under financial difficulties not because of corruption but because it’s spending millions of dollars on America content.
