A new chapter of Candice Berman Gallery is taking shape on Somerset Road.

The Living Gallery was imagined as a space that feels connected to the life around it- to the street, the people who pass through, the conversations that begin inside, and the art that becomes part of everyday experience.

This October, that idea finds a new home at 26 Somerset Road, Green Point

A gallery should feel like a space you can return to- not somewhere you simply pass through.

That sense of ease comes from having the freedom to linger, ask questions, talk about what you’re seeing, or spend a little longer with something that catches your attention.

The Living Gallery is about making space for those moments.

Collecting often starts with simply seeing something differently.

Sometimes it takes another person noticing something you missed, asking a question you hadn’t thought of, or seeing it from another point of view. Those conversations can deepen the way we understand art, and often stay with us long after the first encounter.

Now on view at 223 Jan Smuts Avenue, Moletelo: A Gathering of Memories by Frans Thoka brings together memory, family and the spaces where people meet across time.

Moletelo is a night vigil in Sepedi culture— a gathering where people wait through the dark together, in mourning or ceremony, holding space for both the living and the ancestors.

The exhibition began with a photo album lent to Thoka by his maternal grandmother. Turning through its pages, he encountered faces he had not seen in years, many of whom he could no longer name. From this came a question: will we only meet again at funerals?
