Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg Auction week delighted bidders! With a value sell-through rate of 70%, the auction concluded with an astounding netted total of R40 606 700. The top three selling lots included works by both Irma Stern and William Kentridge.

The highest-selling lot, Stern’s ‘African Woman’ (1940) is a vibrantly layered portrait of a woman, cross-armed in a polka-dot dress and colourful headscarf. Comparing this painting with another of Stern’s works “Portrait of an African Woman’ (1941), artist Marion Arnold said critically of Stern’s oeuvre:

“Many of Stern’s paintings of people from other cultures are concerned primarily with the culture rather than the individual. The essence of the person studied becomes a generalisation for the society because, although the painting is created from contact with particular models, Stern interprets according to a mental construct about the culture of origin. Thus, many of her portraits are ambivalent, possessing both stereotypical and individual characteristics,” (Marion Arnold, 1995).

‘African Woman’ however, is certainly centred on the individual. Portraying the sitter, Stern’s focus and attention to detail in each marking of her brush capture the sitter’s likeness beyond a mere resemblance – the painting also echoes personality and spirit.

Exhibition alert!

“Enter into a poetic landscape to engage with what words cannot say, being transformed by the gestures at play, where room is made for recognition, surprise and even refuge.” – Everard Read

Jeanne Hoffman’s ‘Borrowed Scenery’ will open at Everard Read Cape Town this Wednesday 9 November 2022. “As a creative act, “borrowing scenery” can be described as a framing, a drawing in, of contextual distance – geographical, visual, conceptual.”

Collage is at the heart of Hoffman’s work, her paintings imbued with constellations of fragmented images, shapes and gestural marks all in conversation with one another as they overlap and merge.

“The borrowing of multiple perspectives at once, where distance cohabits with immediacy, is inherent in the very process of artmaking. Meaning is made in the movement between up-close, personal preoccupation and a stepping back, a wider angle, but it is movement that simultaneously cloaks and clarifies. Resisting traditional binaries of abstraction versus figuration, meaning is intimated in the liminal tension, at the moment just before things become certain.” – Everard Read

Visit Everard Read to explore Hoffman’s Borrowed Scenery from 9 – 26 November 2022.

Inviting bidders into the lush and fruitful season, Aspire’s ‘FULL BLOOM: Spring 22 Collection’ was host to a vibrant selection of works from African artists.

The auction which concluded on 1 November 2022 was divided into the categories – New Frontiers, Traditional Classics, The Shape of Things, True to Form, Set in Print and Snapshots – where collectors were spoilt for choice with the sale “presenting a wide range of artworks across different mediums for easy collecting”.

Two favourites amongst bidders were Malcolm de Chazal’s painting ‘Pair of shoes’ and Peter Clarke’s screenprint ‘YOU REALLY MUST COME SOMETIME’ – both selling well above their estimates.

De Chazal’s bright and naive painting exceeded its original estimate of R10 000 - R20 000, reaching R64 488 at the sale; while Clarke’s illustrative print’s final hammer price resulted in R42 210, far greater than its estimated R10 000 - R15 000.

With such exciting results, we look forward to Aspire's next sale ‘20th Century & Contemporary Art’ at the end of this month.

Following Patrick Bongoy’s mesmeric show, ‘Unseen Dimensions of the Known’ at Southern Guild, the gallery has opened a new exhibition of fascinating sculptural works.

His second solo with the gallery, multidisciplinary artist Stanislaw Trzebinski’s presents ‘Solastalgia’. Foreign biomorphic forms encapsulate this new body of work. Organic and colourful, Trzebinski’s sculptures are otherworldly. Their bases, strange ovum-shaped bodies, reaching above with spindling limbs that carry decorative bulbs – like stems holding flowers. Elaborating on the title, Trzebinski poignantly explains:

“I’ve been experiencing what environmental philosopher and sustainability professor Glenn A. Albrecht calls solastalgia. A nostalgia for the loss of places that used to give me solace – that made me feel fully human.”

Referencing the climate crisis, Trzebinski's functional sculpture and artworks ponder “a dark vision of nature’s continuation after the extinction of man.” As the artist states:

“We need to keep seeing the magic in the world, beauty for beauty’s sake, nature for nature’s sake – I want people to appreciate that the natural world is worth fighting for, not because of what it represents, but simply because it is.”

Visit Southern Guild to experience the works in Trzebinski’s evocative ‘Solastalgia’ before its conclusion on 10 November 2022.

Opening yesterday at Muratie Wine Estate, MOK Gallery’s exhibition ‘The Twist of Trees’ celebrates the rich and courageous story behind the history of the vineyard.

Exploring the essence of turning wounds into wisdom, artists Water Dixon, Jeanne Hugo and Dina Kuijers have come together for this explorative & immersive showcasing. “Through the firing of ceramic bodies, ink staining of silk and etching of charcoal ash onto paper, the artists take a calm repose and reflect on the aesthetics of adversity and becoming fully immersed in one’s body.”

Once home to Ansela van de Caab, a woman born into slavery in the Cape Castle, the three clay brick chambers of MOK Gallery date back to the 17th-century. Ansela’s story of unimaginable hardship and perseverance begins the rich history of Muratie and inspires this exhibition.

Curated by Jeanne Hugo, each artist brings to the exhibition a sense of introspection, a reflective contemplation on life, womanhood and the often challenging obstacles that we are each presented with.

Visit Muratie and immerse yourself in this delicate yet utterly moving exhibition. ‘The Twist of Trees’ runs from 16 October – 22 November 2022.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the 1-54 Contemporary African art fair returns to Somerset House this October hosting 50 international exhibitors across 21 countries. Berman Contemporary, Kalashnikovv Gallery and WHATIFTHEWORLD will be the South African galleries participating in the much anticipated three-day event.
