From Stage to Screen Acting Workshop 👨‍🏫
Facilitated by Thorsten Wedekind 🎭

Uniquely qualified to run this workshop, Thorsten has extensive experience in both film and television, and the theatre. As a local and international casting director for more than 30 years, he has 43 feature films, 12 short films & 48 TV series to his credit, including ALI (with Will Smith & Jamie Foxx), BLOOD AND WATER (Netflix), Leon Schuster’s most recent film, MR BONES 3 – SON OF BONES, and 7DE LAAN, as resident Casting Director for the last 4 years of its run. As a theatre director, Thorsten most recently won a Best Director Naledi Award for the play, SARAJEVO, which also won the award for Best Production, and which returns to the Theatre on the Square for another run in August.

What to expect from this workshop:
A rare opportunity to better understand the differing components of acting on stage as opposed to a performance for camera, and in the process, optimising your chances of successfully auditioning for a role in either medium. 🎭🎬 The structure of this workshop, however, allows for various facets of the craft to be covered even if you have no interest in trying film acting. For example, though you never know what unexpected opportunity might suddenly arise, the feedback and analysis you receive via the method of your workshop performances being filmed, allows you to get an insider’s view of how your acting is being perceived, regardless of which medium it is being created for, and what style of acting you are attempting to convey and project. Thus, whether you want to improve your stage acting craft, polish your auditioning skills, give film and TV acting a try, receive guidance and advice on what is holding you back, or gain further insight into different acting styles and approaches. This workshop aims to provide value, whatever aspect you would like to focus and concentrate on! 🎞️🎥🎭

Enjoying the unmasking of our workshop series facilitators? Well lucky for you there’s more! 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫 Stay tuned to meet the rest of our esteemed facilitators. 🎭🤹‍♀️

Directing for Community Theatre Workshop 👨‍🏫
Facilitated by Hendrik Greyvenstein 🙋‍♂️🎭

Hendrik Greyvenstein (Hennie) is a highly respected pillar of the Franklin Players Community Theatre who has spent over two decades nurturing local talent, encouraging new writers, and championing quality productions. His journey with Franklin Players began in 2004 when he auditioned for the role of Detective Sergeant Porterhouse in Ray Cooney’s ‘Run for Your Wife’, where the thrill of audience laughter inspired him to start writing and directing his own stage plays for the annual One-Act Play Festival. Since then, he has written and directed many award-winning one-act plays, such as ‘Pensioner’s Thursday’, ‘The Golf Lesson’, ‘The Wine Steward’, ‘The Ending’, ‘The Final Request’, ‘11:59’, ‘The Abadon’, ‘The Final Dress Rehearsal’, and ‘George’s Encounter’ with Miss Fortune. In addition to serving as Franklin Players Chairperson in 2022, Hennie further demonstrated his flair for fast-paced comedy by directing the acclaimed Ray Cooney ‘Caught in the Net’ in 2023. ✨

What to expect in this Workshop:
Drawing on 22 years of experience with Franklin Players, Hendrik will guide directors through the essential elements of creating successful community theatre productions while maintaining artistic integrity. Participants will explore techniques for building strong and believable characters, developing effective rehearsal processes, and working effectively with actors.

Whether you are a seasoned director or just beginning your directing journey, this workshop offers practical insights, valuable experience, and a deeper understanding of bringing compelling stories to life on stage. 🤹‍♀️🎭

Hendrik will be bringing his vast industry expertise to facilitate their upcoming Stage Management Workshop, and also join Brandon with the Technical Theatre Workshop!

What is Technical Theatre ? 🤔💭
Technical theatre covers all the behind-the-scenes elements that bring a live stage show to life. It brings together creativity and engineering across crucial disciplines like lighting, sound, set design, costumes, and props. The entire operation is run by a stage manager who coordinates the crew and cues. Without this crew, actors would perform in the dark on an empty stage, as tech creates the mood, atmosphere,
and illusion of reality for the audience.

Attached below, is a link for a technical theatre booklet, a quick read before and after participating in the workshop:

Please keep your eyes peeled as we uncover our next facilitators. 🤹‍♀️🤹‍♀️🎭

What does a Stage Manager do? 🤔💭
Ever wondered who holds a show together behind the scenes? This hands-on workshop unpacks the role of the stage manager — the invisible engine of every production. Stage managers are the ones who get on stage, learn the language of the space, and walk through the full journey from first rehearsal to the final curtain. Whether you’re already doing the job informally or just curious, this session will give you the tools, the vocabulary and the confidence to run your show. Part of the Franklin’s Impact Initiative — building skills for the Playground Fest.

Keep your eyes peeled to meet the rest of our facilitators! 🤹‍♀️🎭
