Mandalas
What is a Mandala?
Mandala derives from a Sanskrit word that means “circle”. A Mandala can be abstract in design or geometric and is always circular in form. There are many and various designs and techniques, where some are very freeform and others follow a very geometric design. Many different cultures around the world use Mandalas in their practices. They can be used for therapeutic purposes as well.
The word Mandala can also translate into “container of essence”. Symbolically a Mandala can represent wholeness or oneness - for example:
• a flower is a Mandala when it is in full bloom
• a cell is a Mandala at the height of its vitality
To me personally, the creation of a Mandala is a glorious treat. Creating images inside a circle have become a wonderful journey. I started working in sketchbooks and each Mandala became an experiment. I found I loved the focus and ability to surrender to the rhythmic process of making repeated marks. It seemed to help me create a space of quiet and pause, and even contemplation. It has become rather addictive! I am developing my own marks, using my intuition, solving problems as I go along. I love these mixed media painting full of layers, colours and depth and took it a step further, designing a Mandala on a canvas. Certainly a different technique, but so fulfilling!
