Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkopf’ I, 2018 – Desert Rose

This beautiful desert rose is the very epitome of resilience. Thriving in the Karoo, where the heat is fierce and water is scarce, it carries its beauty through the harshest of seasons with quiet grace. Each rosette shifts in colour through the year, from a fresh, verdant green to a deep burgundy red, as the seasons turn and the rains come and go.

Its resilience goes further still. As the branching stems grow heavy with rosettes, they sometimes bend and break beneath their own weight. Yet rather than wither, the fallen piece puts down roots where it lands and quietly begins to grow again.

That’s a wrap on our portes ouvertes at the AAPL studios. Thank you to everyone who came by this weekend, it was a joy to share the work in person.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing the story behind each artwork, beginning with this one, a plant that has been extinct in the wild for more than 80 years, now living on in paint and paper. Because each one carries a story.

I spend hours researching every plant, studying every part of it. Many are so tiny I have to look at them under a microscope to document them scientifically.

Then I scale them up on the canvas, much bigger than life, so you can finally see them. Most of the time you’d step on them without noticing.

To me, these plants are metaphors for our own lives. My work is deliberately simple, because less is more.

As a member of the Botanical Society of Cape Town, I’ve seen many of these works go into catalogues and exhibitions. But that isn’t why I make them.

I make them so that if these plants disappear one day, we will still hold their memory through art.

A tree full of contrasts. In late winter it bursts into scarlet flowers on bare branches, and the pods that follow split open to reveal bright red seeds, known in South Africa as lucky beans.
