Do you want the bacteria to help you to remove ammonia and nitrite from your Aquarium water? If YES, this article is meant for you. It could help to choose your Best Biological Filter Media For Your Aquarium Filter.

Some interesting data on specific surface area of bio media.

SSA:

1.Silica filter sand 3.5mm to 5mm : 0.75 m²/kg

2.Lava rock : 1.8m² to 8m²/L depending on texture and density , normally brown and black. Fals under the natural volcanic rock category.

3.Pot scrubbers: 4.9m²/L

4.Bio balls: 2.9m²/L

5.12mm to 19mm smooth gravel: 1600m²/m³

6.12cm to 72cm coarse rock: 0.37m² per piece on average.

7.30L Orange bag bale: 144m² per bale

8.Ceramic rings: 2.5m² to 8m²/L depending on quality.

9.Kladness K1: 4.5m²/L

10. Pumice stone, also a natural volcanic rock similar to lava rock, the two can get mixed up, pumice is white to grey, and alot more porous hence lager suface area: 500m²/kg - need to do more research , to many variables to consider pore size , density, and particle size. Need to do a BET test on a few samples to get a better idea. In my opinion it has a much higher SSA than stated here but not less.

11. Biohome: 680m²/kg internal and external surface to form full nitrogen cycle.

12.Alfagrog E25: 90m²/L

13.Alfagrog E40: 45m²/L

14.Seachem Matrix: +-700m²/L

15.Seachem Pond Matrix: 1600m²/L

16.Marine pure: 1300m²/kg

Now why does SSA matter: Greater area for bacteria to colonize using less space.

As an example: A fully grown koi of say 90cm produces 2449 grams of waste in 24 hours.

How much surface area is needed for enough bacteria to break down 2449 grams of waste ?

1100m² of surface area will be needed for just one fully grown koi that consume 3.5% of it's body weight per day per 1000L of water. Body weight used was a average of 7000 grams. Turn over rate pond volume once per hour.

So one fully grown koi would need 380L of bio balls or say 12L of E25 Alfagrog, to break down the waste. Just two example of filter space difference, this is just relying on filter media, this calculation does not take the surface area of the pond and pipes into consideration, because bacteria will form a biofilm on any surface as long as there is flow and sufficient oxygen atleast 5mg/L of dissolved oxygen in the pond, but irrespective of you will still need 1100m² of usable surface area.

Submitted by Chris Neaves on Mon, 01/29/2018 - 15:31 Media is the term used to describe a substratum of material that provides a large surface area for bacteria to grow on for the purpose of bioconversion as well as a substratum of material used in mechanical filters for trapping various solids.
