Protect your Rights: Perform at Licensed Venues

Performing in licensed venues ensures that the music creators receive fair compensation for their work, a process facilitated by SAMRO. SAMRO diligently collects license fees from venues and distributes them as royalties to its members. SAMRO license fees are distributed to members based on the music playlists received from these licensed venues.

How does SAMRO collect fees from licensed venues?

SAMRO enters into licensing agreements with venues such as concert halls, clubs, and event spaces. These venues pay SAMRO license fees for the right to perform copyrighted music publicly. SAMRO then distributes these license fees as royalties to its members.

What happens when one performs in an unlicensed venue?

Performing in an unlicensed venue can lead to missed opportunities for compensation of royalties. SAMRO may not have a licensing agreement with unlicensed venues, meaning the organisation cannot collect fees from them.

As a result, music creators may not receive royalties for the public performance of their musical works.

SAMRO calls unlicensed venues to get their SAMRO Music License today and support the South African music industry.

SAMRO is the primary representative of music Performing Rights in Southern Africa.

⚠️ must read for musicians!

Dear fellow South African musicians,

Did you know that you can apply for an advance from SAMRO? I applied for one a few days ago, and they told me I qualify for an R18k advance based on my royalty earnings over the last 3 years.

I told them that if they actually paid me for my songs over the last 3 years, that figure would be a lot higher. I sent them my Radiomonitor South Africa reports as proof.

They then got back to me saying they'll give me R50k, which is nice but it also seems suspiciously thumb-sucked. Perhaps SAMRO paid me R50k (on the dot) to keep me quiet? If anything, it's made me more curious. I'm on mission to find out how they go about paying artists, and if anyone at SAMRO actually knows what's going on?

It took me one Google search to figure out how much you get paid for a spin on BBC 1. It's £11.98 per minute. So If you have a 3min song, that's around R600. If PRS (the UK SAMRO) underpays, you can just show them your radio reports, and they can pay you what is owed. Easy & transparent.

In South Africa however, no one can tell me what the going rate is. A publisher I've spoken to (who has sat on the SAMRO board) has told me he has this info, but he says he can only help me if I sign to his publishing company, so he can take 33% of my publishing. I call bu****it. From what I've learned, big stations in SA can apparently fetch between R100 to R300 per spin. I'm currently in the process of getting access to the exact information, (which should be freely available to the public) and when I do get it, I believe that more musicians will be able to hold SAMRO accountable for the peanuts & thumb-sucked figures they've been paying us over the years.
